Network shortcuts disappear in Windows 7

Hi All,

I have found out why shortcuts placed in fences (or just on the desktop) to network resources disappear.  It seems that Windows 7 has a new feature that checks weekly for broken links and deletes them and it treats shortcuts to network resources as broken links.

There is a work around which seems to work to fix this.  Go to Control Panel - Troubleshooting then to Change Settings and turn off computer maintenance. This will stop windows 7 from deleting any shortcuts you have to network resources on your desktop.

I'd imagine there might be a less 'drastic' way of retaining them - excluding them from this 'maintenance'...;)

Not through the Trouble shooting. It's an "on" or "off". You can create a shortcut to it on your desktop, and turn it off and then just use it "on demand" manually, but that might allow errors in disk volumes, etc. to exist and destabilize your system.

Instead, since you're really just having that shortcut easily accessible, you might take a look here:

There's a neat little app to download from there which can make your network resources accessible from the systray (then, you can also probably put all these icons in a separate dock using Object Dock 2+).

This way (if a bit cumbersome and arcane) you won't potentially destabilize your OS.
