Why don't they make this F2P?

With the recent growth of the MOBA genre, Riot and, perhaps S2 shortly, have had a lot of success with a free to play business model. I bought Demigod a couple years back, but did not play it very much. I decided to look up how it was doing today, and maybe give it a play, but it seems that the game is all but dead. If GPG were to move over to a free to play model, and give it some advertising (via sites like IGN, GameInformer, etc) this game could quickly gain a second wind and a player base.

I'm all for f2p at this point, but frankly, I don't see it happening.  I don't see either SD or GPG looking to devote teams to restructuring it into a f2p game.  More servers, more staff, more everything.  I'd love it if it happened, but it won't.  They could try something on a smaller scale - make it free to play, but you only get a few characters and can buy the others... I know that's something SD would be capable of (based on releasing occ and da as dlc - they actually tested this functionality), but if there was a substantial fluctuation of people, then it might require additional servers etc.  Anyway, they could probably do all of the with a one time patch, but I just don't think they are going this route.  And the connectivity isn't exactly great.  Gameplay is awesome, but connectivity is a bit of a killer for any sort of large scale plan imo.

I don't think the F2P model is going to work out very well for any other MOBAs.

Valve is pimping the hell out of DoTA2, and it is probably going to hurt LoL, and kill all the up and comings like RoI.

I agree free to play. I doubt DG generates any income at all as it is, I think make demigod free, and have advertisements in the lobby page and when you start a game. Perhaps then do what they got in some other free to play, game completely free - and then sell skins. I want my beast to have a pair of running shoes and a sweatband around it's head, And my sedna SHOULD be wearing a nurses outfit, I'd actually pay for that. Yes I would.
