1st- slow download speed/impulse + 2nd-changed ingame language after update

Hi to all,

I just discovered 2 very annoying technical(?) problems.

Please also note that I did not play (despite updates) for some time due to workload.

I own the german retail version of Sins o.a.s.e. - Trinity (kalypso).

The first problem I noticed day before yesterday is the EXTREMLY slow download speed of

Impulse. Just updating Impulse was several hours ! Updating from 1.21 to 1.30 was

more than a whole work-day. (was not finished after return from work)

Remembering back updating to Ver. 1.21 it was not more than an hour I think.

Also previous updates did not take that long !

As I own a new PC which is not yet up to date concerning game installs and some other

so I am currently switching between old and new PC.

I did an update to Ver. 1.21 on both PCs  just fine.

As the new PC (Win7) was so slow tried to download/install the complete game via Impulse to the

2nd (XP) partition but as Impulse needed several hours to update I aborted this thought.

As of this is there any known problem on stardock/impulse side concerning slow speed ?

Otherwise are there any suggestions to me what to check and how to do this ? (I usually just

configure the PC / Internet etc. with the help of some friends (when they can spare the time)

and after that I just leave the PC alone. As of this my technical skills may be below standard).

The second annoying problem I discovered was that, after updating, the ingame language

changed from english to german !  I prefer english as ingame language. I cannot find any

way to switch it back and this did NOT happen before !  (Solved ! Thanks mandokir, didn't know

the German.str solution)

Thanks for any reply

 Just discovered.

I wanted to check this with my old PC and tried to login via impulse.

I just got the error message: "Server not responding, please check your internet connection"

As I logged in with my other PC just fine I cannot explain this. Also Internet is just running fine.

Any Ideas ? Maybe some suggestions what to check / compare with the other PC ?

A new Install of Impulse was of no effect.

There is a "edit Proxy settings" but I have no idea how to use that. Tried the suggested

proxy:stardock.com, but got some message that it is only an example.

The download speed is a network issue - if you've been trying for a while and can't get a decent download speed, the problem is almost certainly with your network connection or ISP, and not with Impulse's servers. Is your other PC using the same network? If so, there might be something installed on the first PC that's blocking fast downloads (or is hogging all the bandwidth, but that seems unlikely).

You could try exiting all unnecessary programs other than Impulse (use taskmanager to check that only the essential system processes are running)

Do you have any problems with other large downloads on the first PC?

Thanks for the reply.

As far as I can determine it should not be an network issue as ALL other downloads seem to be fine (2k dsl connection, usually at 200kb/sec.). As a test I tried to download a small file at the time I was updating (patch 1.31) to see if there was a general problem and it downloaded fine enough (3MB at appr. 60kb/sec.), I think Impulse hogged the remaining bandwidth.

Furthermore the problem had not been there some time ago as I updated sins and downloaded some other game I own and could not find the Installation CD at that time.

The other PC was not on at that time as I use it usually only as a backup/alternate now.

All other programs were closed and only Impulse started. What I noticed though was that Impulse seems to be still updating(?) even after it displayed my games and such even after some time. (the moving circle was moving even after 1 hour !). However I do not know what caused this.

Other large downloads do not seem a problem also (Installed Steam and downloaded a game at 230 kb/sec.) and the Impulse patch Update was rather small (appr. 6MB). Furthermore Impulse is current, but it did take some hours to update.

It seems to be one of these unexplainable (to most people) PC problems. I hope that in some weeks/months time some friends may have some time to give it a try to track it down. Or I could get lucky and it disappears (sometimes this happans, also one of these unexplainable things).

If you haven't had any network connectivity issues with anything other than this particular Sins download, I only see two possibilities:

* something deeply embedded on your computer really doesn't like Impulse downloads and slows them to a crawl (unlikely, since you said all other programs were closed - did you verify this through taskmanager?)

* Your router if you have one or ISP is repressing Impulse downloads but allows most other network requests to be uninhibited

Maybe if your computer is portable or has a wireless card you could try downloading through some other internet connection? I wouldn't hold out too much hope for that working, but I don't really have any other ideas.

As of this my technical skills may be below standard

For Impulse issues, I'd suggest contacting Impulse support directly, as Stardock no longer owns it.

That begs the question why it did not occur previously with the other updates (ver. 1.21) and the install of sins via impulse. And it is also a fresh win 7 install as I have not yet done very much with the new PC (except basic programs like pdf reader, some games like sins). Yes, I did this also.

It did not repress Impulse previously.

This would be more work than it is worth it I am afraid.

I am afraid it seems to be one of this PC mysteries which may or may not solve themselves. I still hope it will just go away the same way it came :-)

Thanks. I did not know that. I may try this if I am able to isolate it some more.

I hope that some friends with more technical knowledge can spare some time to look into this matter.
