jpeg quality on wallpapers

I think the preview pictures for the wallpapers should be higher quality, wallpapers are probably the most affected by the optimisation, basically, the wallpaper i just uploaded looks terrible because of the preview image, you cant even tell what the picture is

the higher the quality, the more bandwidth required to view. and wincusto is having bandwidth problems.

If you want a higher quality preview, use a higher quality on your JPEG, in Photoshop, this is an option when you use the "Save for Web" feature, and in PSP you can access it by clicking on the "Options" button in the save dialog when the file type is set to JPEG. I would recommend keeping file size to a minimum for the good of the site though, if you want to use 100% quality on the JPEG, try shrinking the image a little at the same time so as not to put to much of a strain on the site.

by preview i dont mean the zoomed picture, i mean the thumbnail which the site admin optimises

I agree with you berzerka, I hope that someone (T-Man?)will read this thread and give a solution to this problem.
I think that is a question of a few extra KB's only.

And if you have to zoom more pictures to get a better idea of what they look like, are you really saving bandwidth? I wonder if the admins have quantified that.

Yes, we have quantified that. After we tweaked the qaulity of the thumbnails we definitely saw an imediate decrease in bandwidth.

So by decreasing the thumbnail quality is definitely helping us with bandwidth. I do not forsee us changing that anytime in the near future.

the point im making isnt about bandwidth, its about not being able to see what the wallpapers are..
