This Dead Horse Needs More Beating

Question: Do you think during the time it's going to take IC to make Rebellion, they could have redone the engine and made it 64x multi-threaded? I'm looking at the poll and it says "Would you like to see another Sins expansion?" when what I really wanted to read was "Would you like to see a vast and much needed improvement to the current engine?"

Where did it go wrong? Were we not vocal enough?

Yeah, I get it. They need to sell something to stay in business. I would have gladly paid for a 64x multi-threaded sins with a new interface. Would it sell like hotcakes? Maybe not, but I don't think IC was expecting record breaking sales when they planned out Diplomacy either. On the other hand, new players would have gotten the definitive version of sins (Trinity) with the better engine so it might have done relatively well compared to the expansion sales.

Thoughts?

How hard is it to take a pre-existing program and modify it so that it can be multi-threaded?  (I honestly have no idea.)  Would it mean completely rewriting the program from the ground up?  I hope that they will continue to at least try to make it less and less CPU and RAM intensive if it can't be multi-threaded.

Yes. You pretty much have to decide from the beginning if and how to use threads with your program, or at the very least early on in Development. If they just copied and pasted code and put it in component threads you would get desyncs and random bugs/errors/crashes galore. The internal program architecture would have to be completely scrapped and rewritten to get all the threads to work in a way so that this doesn't happen.

Here's a question: why continue to bitch about this?

I'm pretty sure they've heard ya.

Some assume that the louder they are, the more they will be heard.

My kids try that often. Never works. Maybe those that do this had parents that let them get away with it.

Those kinds of changes would easily take a couple years to implement and adequately test before even starting on fun bits. :P

It would be very irresponsible not to warn people of the danger of attacking animals.  They may not be dead--this educational video demonstrates well...you have been warned.

Knew what this was about long before I read the thread. Dead horse has been beaten too much.

I thought it was going to be about LAA...  And that would have made me very sad.  ='(   I was pleasantly surprised.
