Impulse update speed

<rant mode="on">

Log in to Steam.  New Civ V update. Cool.

Steam thinks about it for 2-3 secs then starts downloading.

Enjoy hours of new gameplay.

Log in to Impulse.  New Elemental update. Cool.

Impulse thinks about it for 5-10 mins then starts downloading.

Lose interest and start surfing on the web.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Hopefully Gamestop can solve this problem.

don't hold your breath, I expect someone to eat their socks when Gamestop does diddly squat

It seems to be related to it going through and looking for files to update and building a download list, but it does seem to take a very long time before it starts downloading for some reason.

It may also be to do with its interaction with Windows 7 (maybe).

Best regards,

I'm not the only one with this issue? Great. I mean...

Impulse is slow to start and after it has started, it takes ages to connect (dunno where, Impulse servers?) and downloading something takes ages. Calculating download size..., come back five minutes later, still the same issue. I reinstalled EWOM some time ago and that DL size-calculation took 15+ minutes.

And Impulse seems to be using a lot of system resources (CPU at least).

Browsing stuff on Impulse isn't fast either... (Steam is equally bad for browsing stuff though)

Well, atleast you got another reason to upgrade to a new CPU architecture besides games :P

The update speed in the verifying step has to do with the number of files a game has.  We do differential patches and check each and every file in the game directory and compare that against the file list for the new version.  Based on what's different, that's what you download.

Games with a lot of files will take longer in this phase of updating.
