A comment caught my eye. . . .and a proposal for the benefit of the community

I thought this should be in it's own thread. . . In the post http://scripts.wincustomize.com/msgboardid.asp?id=17381 TomCruise says that Stardock won't place the skins for competitor's products on this site. While this is understandable from a purely market perspective, it makes me wonder about the commitment of Stardock to the skinning community. Please don't misunderstand me, I love stardock's products and am a registered OD member, and I know they put out great software. However, the site's mission statement is "The goal of this site is to act as a general skin site to the community." A general skin site would allow the community to be the judge as to what the site should host, or host enough variety to satisfy the whole community. Furthermore, the existence of competition is beneficial to the community, though not to stardock, as it is a driving force for both better products, better service, and better prices. If this site is devoted to the general community, and not stardock, then it would promote competition. I propose that either the mission statement be changed (to remove the pretense of community) or the site be ammended to include the skins of competitor's products.

I still have no answer concerning the mission statement . . . so call me elitist (which is stupid and false) or whatever you like, but there's still a lack of honesty.

Just skimming this thread, jesus its long, the answer 'no we're not gonna change the mission statement' comes through several times. fb doesn't agree with your interpretation. End of story.

The reason behind the lack of honesty is kinda cloudy. . . .This claims to be a site for the general skinning, but should claim, as is the truth, that they host stadock products, and if they have money for bandwidth (if that is the reason; many have mentioned that we wouldn't want to put any stardock employees out on the street by, gasp, embracing competition) they will host some other skins aswell. It's merely a request that the stardock folks not pretend to serve two masters.

stop being a sycophant, frank. Am I wrong? if I am, tell me why and how, but don't tell me to get a life. . . You don't know me outside this thread. Either respond intelligently instead of with jibes, or don't post.

This issue is already settled hegramet. We aren't changing the mission statement. We believe it is HONEST and accurate. You disagree. That's fine. We can agree to disagree.

If Stardock is paying the bills (or a significant "chunk") they can do whatever they want, in my opinion. If someone's unhappy with the site, go ahead and leave. No one is forcing you here. Or you could calm down a bit, and do as Frogboy said: agree to disagree.

I agree to disagree. And I never said they didn't have the right to make any changes or none at all, in fact I explicitly state that several times. And I am calm, I like the site and am staying, I merely disagree that this site, in its current form, does not present an image of the community I am part of favorably.

Hegramet: I have about 30 Quicknotes skins posted around the skin sites. This site doesn't have a Quicknotes section. So what? I don't care, If I make some more Quicknotes skins I'll upload them to a site that has a section for them instead of concluding that this site is evil 'cos it doesn't have a Quicknotes section!
And by the way folks, hegramet is an anagram of "the gamer".
And, why should we respond intelligently to your posts when you obviously have no grip on reality.
"THIS IS A WEBSITE"!!!!!, we make pretty pictures to stick on your computer, end of story. I'm afraid I have to agree with Frank, you seriously need to get a life, along with some therapy for your jealousy.
Have a nice day.

Where do you get the idea of jealousy from???? And this psuedonymn is not an anagram, it is a litereary reference. Did I say it was something other than a website? Also, "evil" is Brad's word, not mine, I haven't used it once. Don't put words in my mouth, read what I actually posted.

Jeez, the mood is ugly in here. Can't someone just make a suggestion without being told off? Some of these "strangers" are taking things awfully personal.

What are we still talking about?

/me takes it off topic seeing this is leading nowhere

That name in my account is not my name. When I signed up, my account data got mixed up with some Japanese guy/gal. I left it that way as a sort of battle scar (and yes Doreen, you know the real thing).

To quote BoXXi, "we make pretty pictures to stick on your computer, end of story". That about sums it up.

BTW, as most of you know, I work for Stardock. I've been here for over 6 years. Brad is not evil, and he does not do things for personal gain. This site costs *a lot* of $$$. This site does not profit Stardock. We run it with the most popular apps.

If we hosted skins for everything, other skin sites would lose traffic. We are working for the community. We have had many discussions about how to run the site without stepping on other skin site's toes. The loss of skinz.org hurt us all. And, no, WC is not a skinz.org clone. It was never intended to be.

But, it is here for the community. You can either embrace it and help it grow, or criticize it and miss out on the wonderful site that it will become. It is the people who participate day to day that make the site.

No site is perfect, and they all have to be run by somebody and have a set of rules. There has been a lot of work put into this site, and it's still maturing. Let's see what it looks like in a year. If you guys still think there are problems then, then we can talk about it.

craeonics takes it off topic seeing this is leading nowhere

good thinking!
having read all of this, i have a philosofical (i give up, got a headache, dont care about its spelling) problem.

if we accept as a working theory that stardock is evil, then we have a problem. i have looked carefully, and have assured myself that i am not stardock. however, everyone at work agree's that i am evil.

so, either people cannot recognise evil when they see it (see, i really am misunderstood), there is more than one evil here (which seems unlikely in such a small place), or people are lying to me again

ps, i am not mad, i have bits of paper proving i am quite sane. i write them myself, so i know that they are genuine

Well as everyone knows, if it's written down, it must be true. Even more so if it's on TV!

good point!
/me goes looking for tv to write "this is to certify that Feline is sane" on

I haved checked the horse's pulse. It's dead. Stop beating this horse and drop this thread please.

I have a little stamp on my hand that says "Sane". Thus, I'm sane...

perhaps i should form a comunity with craeonics by sitting on him and purring while he feeds me chocolate.

that way he can learn to trust me
who called stardock evil? I missed it. can you point me to the comment which says that? and to critisize does not mean to not enjoy something. . . It is a form of participation even. And yes, as I've said, I do appreciate this site and its contributions to the community.

Some are guilty of inference, some are guilty of pedantry, and others are obsessed with semantics...

i ended up with the word "evil" while trying to sum up my impressions of some of the ideas that seemed to be going on.

of course, by the time the words reached here they had gone through the *feline* zone, and things are never quite the same after that

ultimately i was trying to "defuse" what seemed like an unbridgable difference of opinions.
