Just curious if anyone has ever had any experience using this way of losing weight or is it just wishful thinking? I am not a big eater and I try to watch the types of food I eat but regardless I have got a little big around the mid section withing the last 10 years. Maybe it is an age thing or one too many cold ones or both but now I am wanting to get rid of the excess weight. I know you will probably say exercise is the best solution and I agree. In fact in my 20's I use to be a runner. The problem is now I have a bad knee so hitting the tread mill or even an elliptical trainer (Which I Have) is out of the question.

Any opinions or suggestions?

An easy exercise to do that will build up your your upper body and tone your middle as well, stand behind your computer chair and put both hands on back of chair and push down, hold for ten seconds and repeat until you've had enough .there should be no strain on your knee as you are pushing down your weight is going up.You will feel the strain on your whole upper body with each push including your mid section.

I wouldn't put my faith in weight loss pills. I read an article in popular science saying the FDA found undeclared pharmaceuticals in most of the over-the-counter diet pills, which could be dangerous if you don't know about them. Then there are pills that do other things, like the one that swells up in your stomach to make you feel full - but that just sounds dangerous to me.

Exercise and eating right are always a good combo if you want to lose weight. Exercise speeds up your metabolism, so if you ingest fewer calories every day you will see a difference. If you just diet, then your metabolism will probably slow down and you'll eventually hit a "wall" and have trouble losing any more weight.

I'm sorry about your knee, but the good news is, there are other ways to work out. There are more benefits from exercising than just losing weight, which is why I don't think we'll ever be able to replace it with a pill.

Not knowing about any health problems you might have JC, I'd suggest you schedule a 20-30 minute meeting with your doctor to discuss this topic.

The preparations offered in your external link will have side effects, adverse effects and very possibly interact with medications you might be taking.

You can certainly research those products [which are not FDA regulated as they generally call themselves "nutritional supplements" just to avoid that] and bring your research to your meeting with your doctor as he might not be familiar with those preparations specifically.

Hope this has helped, and hope that knee troubles you less. I've found that if medically safe for you, pool exercise (due to buoyancy) will be far less taxing on your knee. Try to see in there are indoor, heated pools close to you. Deals can be made with hotels/motels for pool usage.

I lost 56lbs in four months by eating less and walking every day. I too have a bad knee, the result of a motorcycle accident, but if you walk every day and go a little bit further every time, you will soon lose weight, I guarantee it.

No need for pills and diets, you can only lose weight by burning more calories than you put in your mouth. Simple fact!.

And those beers won't help, believe me. :)

All of these pills out there are bad. Caffiene, will jump you out of your skin or the stuff that makes you fart grease, these are just the beginning of the bad side effects.

It's mathematical, what you overate, you have to undereat.  (are those words I just made up?)

BoXXi, nailed it. And Doc with water exercise is also great.

About 30 years ago I lost around 85lbs of ugly fat.... I got a divorce. :w00t:

Truth is, I need to lose more weight and I will.  I may have bad hip, bad knees and bad ankle... lower back problems, too, but I can still walk and I'm trying to go a little further each time.  It hurts like buggery afterward sometimes, and so what... no pain no gain.. well loss in this case.

Actually, when I mow and whippersnip the yard I'd probably walk up to 8 kms by the time I'm done... so instead of just walking someplace I might mow and whippersnip 3 times a fortnight instead of twice.

In 1999, I weighed 196 pounds.  I'm 5' 10".  That was 10 pounds over my max weight allowed under the height/weight requirements.  I did PT everyday and ran every other day at least 3 miles.  But I couldn't get under 190 or so.  A friend turned me onto Ripped Fuel, which at the time still contained ephedrine.  In 3 months of running, weight training, cardio (my normal routine) plus using the Ripped Fuel, I dropped down to 164 pounds.  I'd not seen that weight since 9th grade.  So that was the good side of it.

The bad side of it:  I completely lost my appetite for the first week.  I don't think I ate anything, at all, for the first 3 days.  My heart rate was off the charts and I was always jittery.  I experienced dizzy spells a lot.  Plus some other side effects.  After about another month of using them, I quit.  After about 2 weeks without them, I had pretty much normalized again and my weight, while still doing all the same PT, had come up to about 175.  Which was acceptable to me.

Would I use pills again?  No.  I know what I felt like and wouldn't want that again.  Not to mention the stuff we now know about ephedrine.  I currently have a bit of a middle, but I'm working on it at the Y running and doing laps in the pool plus weights.  My knees and my back aren't the greatest, due to my time in service and all the shit I did but I'm getting there.

Speak with your doctor.  Tell him what you want to do.  Get a physical and you should be able to come to some type of excercise plan that works for you.

Everyone here wrote some good advice. I especially thank you natsa2 for the first hand account of using pills. From the sounds of things I better stay away from them. I do not need or want any harmful side effects.

Also congratulations is due for those who have lost weight. I know I can if I want to bad enough. I would like to lose 30 pounds. I am 6'1" and weigh 240. I am also stocky so the weight does not show as much on me as it would someone else but I can feel it sometimes when I have to do physical work. Thanks again everyone for your input.

It's been a year for me now, since I changed my eating habits, and I'm 45 pounds lighter and down 3 jeans sizes.  I started eating a Mediterranean diet (many more veggies than I ever ate in my entire life, very little meat, much more fish and legumes).  Other times I've lost weight in my life, it came off a lot quicker, but it wasn't something I could live with, so I'd eventually gain it all back (and then some).  This is something that fits me; I can do this for the rest of my life.

I found this cool website that helps me calculate my nutritional needs: http://caloriecount.about.com/  A good eating plan isn't just about low calorie, it's about maximum nutrition.  My biggest challenge is getting enough potassium.

With your knee problem, you might want to think about swimming or water aerobics.

Man, I've been the same weight for as long as I can remember (6'2" at 180 lbs.) and it never fluctuates over a pound either way. (always 179-181) I do workout EVERY day (running, free weights, aerobics, etc.) and it's as much a part of my life as breathing....but it always has been. My diet has pretty much stayed the same too with lots of whole grains, veggies and fruit, I avoid red meat, white flour products, sugar and fat (no doughnuts and cake for me!), I intentionally eat/chew slowly (no matter how good something is!) and I eat lighter as the day wears on (breakfast-heavy, lunch-medium, dinner-light) In between meals, I usually do a protein shake if I get hungry. I RARELY drink (MAYBE a glass of wine once a month, if that) so that's not an issue but it does seem to really pack the weight on some people....quick too. Never have smoked either and yes, I'm very prejudiced against smokers....sorry puffers. There should be plenty of things you can do physically even with knee problems though, Junior, but I believe if you watch your eating (and drinking) habits, I think you'll be surprised how much weight you can lose even without working out. Unfortunately, if it's really good it's probably not very good for you so you may have to summon up some good ole willpower. I wish you luck with it, my friend! :|

Thanks a lot Karen and way to go with the weight loss. Thank you too navigatsio. No need to apologize for knocking the puffers. I use to smoke but gave it up cold turkey 20 years ago.

Hi Junior Crooks...

First off... Losing weight is NOT going to happen over night. You didn't gain it over night. You are not going to lose it over night. It is going to take time. When it doesn't happen pretty much over night then that is when a lot of people just give up. A myth is that you cannot eat pretty much anything you want. You can... but it is to be in the right amounts and yes... you do have to exercise. Walking is a good way of doing it. There is no getting around exercise. It has to be done. Another thing.... is thinking that you CAN lose the weight. That it is going to take TIME. The mind thinking that you CAN do it is part of it too. If you don't think that it is going to take TIME... it is not going to work no matter what you do.

Actually there is one diet pill that reall works:

1 Aspirin.

What you do is get one of those little packets with 2 aspirins. Open it. Save one for some other person.

Take 'your' aspirin and put it between your lips.

HOLD IT THERE until the weight is gone.

Just kidding. ;)

Doc....that's for contraception....you hold the aspirin between your knees [or rather she does]...;)

An, but the smart bloke taps her on the shoulder in the middle of the night and says: "Darling, I have a Headache."

She, still three parts asleep, says: "Well take an aspirin, then."  .... mission accomplished. :d

Hehe, my first wife was a little deaf, and on those nights when a bloke wants to do what blokes want to do, I'd ask in a very soft voice: "Do you wanna go to sleep or what?"

Nine times out of ten she'd say 'What?" and I'd think all my Christmases had come at once. :-"

to the hospital and finally they worked out why id taken a turn for the worst..

i will never touch another diet pill.......

but on a good note i have lost 10kg since december, ive been going on bouts of fasting which really help me mentally and physically.

This is all you need to know.

http://www.thepaleodiet.com/

In 6 months I lost 60 lbs, beat type 2 diabetes, brought my blood pressure down, brought my cholesterol down from 210 to 130, and got off all medications.  The only exercise I added to this was running a mile 4 times a week.
