curious about something

Sorry to start another thread but I got a question for you guys. I finally got my mail accounts going and recieved 27 emails in one account and about 15 in another all with attachments all sent within an hour of each other. Most of the emails were from a jamie chen on one of my account but there were emails with other people listed as the sender. They all said the same thing:
Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

See you later. Thanks

some files were .bat some were .pif, and others were.com files. The subject listed names of my skins on some others were in some foreign language.

My question- has this happened to anyone else or am I just "lucky"?

In fact, you're not lucky. It's a virus that cause all this email spam.

Check here for more info http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.html

One piece of advice: update your antivirus program ASAP and do a full scan of your hard drive.

Hope this help

helps alot thanks! I've been on the net for over four years and this is the first virus I have ever had to deal with. I didn't open the email attachments thankfully.

that's a lucky thing that you didn't open them!!!

...delete them straight away and take flip's advice with the virus scanning. The virus was called SirCam, and it's a nasty one!

happy hunting

Tananda, it's the sircam32 worm virus....a nasty one.
It is still in the wild, but solutions are available....it's only been around for about 2 weeks or so, and it seems Dangeruss was the first lucky person to get it and pass it on....fortunately he was pretty quick at notifying everyone.
The first emails looked really innocuous, actually named like something you might expect from a friend...the latest I received [today] were very obviously NOT....

Not to go off on a rant, but anyone that actually WOULD open one of those attachments deserves a virus as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, it's a virus. I got two of these today and one last week. The big tip-off was the huge file size and two extensions, one being executable, which varied. I've seen .bat, .lnk (never seen that one before but my Visual Basic 6 compiler had it in the help section), and .exe. I was suspicious and did not open the attachments, and deleted the file immediately. Also I got the first one saying "I send you a budget for your approval..." I was a student intern web designer at the time, no one would have sent me a budget!
