New player - Should I play

Hi all,

I am a new player with little experice of the 'Dota' genre. Considering this, is it worth the getting the game? I hear the community is rather small and i think it will beh ard to find players of equal (read no) skill

Actually there are quite a lot of new players around at the moment (relatively speaking) at peak times (US and RUS/EU). But you are correct the community is very small. On the other hand dg is an extremely addictive game for some, and is hands down impressive in terms of graphics, and so is well worth the few dollars imo even if it isn't patched again....

Be forewarned that some players will treat you badly as a new player. i.e. letting you waiting in their lobby for ages and then booting you without a word. But there are lots of new players, just make sure you play the single player campaigns to learn the ropes, and read the lobby titles before joining to avoid disappointment.

But the game is awesome, so yes.

Hello \o/

Just considering the game itself and it's price, I'd say it's worthy even just for single player or LAN party games.

However, Multiplayer probably would be tough at start.  Yeah community is small and yeah, they are usually rude enough to kick new players out and leave them without a single game. But, not everything is that bad. Lately more and more new players are coming, so you can find someone of about your skills. Not many though, but depends on time. Moreover, you can find some players which are willing to help you to learn (easy or hard way). Some prefer shouting at you to do that or that, others help by pointing your mistakes or what to do, to get better. This is a team game, so solving a weakness in a team should be priority (instead of ignoring and leaving the new player to die unexpectedly).

As I see you at least a bit use forums (which many new players usually don't), and here you can find strategy guides, other helpful information, mods (very good for new players), etc. If you need to ask something just ask  :sun:

If you happen to get this game, I'd be willing to be your "trainer" and teach you a thing or two if you'd like (in game nicks, "Darkliath" or "Darkliath_") ;P

Read the strat guide for oak ub erebus or tb,  learn one of them.  Play that dg until you are sufficient at it.  While doing that learn when to teleport when to sigil,  when not to attack, when to keep attacking.  All these things are way more important then being super good at a class.  do not join a game unless it says for noobs/new players or ppl will kick you.

There's little point in trying to join an MP game here, even if it's labled "noobs".  They just kick you without explanation.  At least this last time, the host said "sorry" before doing it.  He still didn't give a reason, but he was relatively polite.

(I'd still like to hit him with a shovel.   ;P  )

Perhaps playing only with those players that you already know.  Seems counter intuitive though.

I've lost faith in this community.  Still, it's a good single player game with the AI patches.

Hey, MottiKhan... That's not always true... When I host noobs games or all welcome, that really means noobs (or at least I hope that they are noobs/not smurfs) or really all welcome (only people who are not allowed would be with very high ping ones, or heavily insulting people, but even to them I'd tell a reason why they cannot play...)

And actually I don't know... Even when I join others with "noobs" labeled hosts, I don't have much of a problem... No kicks (well, rarely yeah, could get kicked).

If you yourself would like to play online, I'd be happy to try (skill, knowledge doesn't matter). Whether against ai, Enhanced ai or whatever would be fine. Even something like 2 ai + me vs 2 ai + you (no, that wouldn't be a stomp nor anything similar, because I can find out how to balance myself quite easily) or together against other people (I don't care to lose).

As always, you can't get kicked if you host your own noob or new player game.  Really sad to hear you had a bad experience, but not everyone is like that.

Thanks, Darkliath.  I'll look for you in the arena the next time I try it on.  (edit - and +1 karma for the offer)

@Pacov - Thanks, but I'm not basing this on just one experience.  It's a trend that I've seen as of late.  Perhaps my stats might scare folks into thinking I have more experience than I do.  I've been around a long time, even if I haven't been playing Demigod that much.  I wouldn't have a clue as to how to properly host a game and balance the players that join.

If I had time to devote to the problem, I might be able to figure it out, but life's too short.  There's too much whiskey out there that I haven't gotten to.  Yet.

End of MottiKhan's quote

Hosting literally requires one click of the mouse.

Good way to begin is using the skirmish ai mod. It plays more like people. And is really best to create a room when starting.
