A Geek's Dream Come True

How many of you would like to have THIS in your office/home? http://www.poetictech.com

Seriously, I'm beginning to wonder whether or not I'm slightly deranged... I think I want this more than, say, a Ferrari!

Hehehe! Yes, I saw before. Two years ago, we tried convincing our boss that we really needed that, and that our productivity would be so much better! ! Didn't work. :/

Rats! That's too bad it didn't work, Paxx! I was secretly hoping some wealthy benefactor would organize a contest where we could win one of these! sigh...

hmm... spend like ten grand on a desk and chair that looks like it was designed to milk dotcoms, or buy a nice comfy chair and a good desk for $1k, and pump the other 9 into a workstation... hmmm...

nehhh....
no place to rest your arms on..
two monitors but none is directly in front of you.
and the whole installment looks like a medieval torture device. Or is this some kind of a gym device ??
Now that I said that, I feel better with my plain old chair...

no imagination... I want to sit there and proclaim 'make it so.' as the captain of the Starship Developer.

THanks for the link those look fantastic, the only drawback I saw was the lack of multiple keyboards, but otherwise that does look like an ideal design for a workstation setup. Along with gives me some great ideas for a new desk arangement I have been debating building. Two bad they do not need beta testers to promote and test the new designs.

I would call it the "Divorce Toolkit - How to drive your wife insane"

I think I'll spare my wife's heart by not considering this kit Very interesting kit though.

Over my dead body. Being a real designer (as in trained and all) I use my own stuff and do my own set up.

If I win the lottery, I'll get one of those. I don't care what it does, it just looks so damn cool! I would also put my stereo system in it, and just chill out.

I'm with Mobius on this one. These pics give me some ideas for what to do. In about a months, I'm building myself a modular workstation for my office (spare bedroom) at home. I've been playing with some designs, but this inspires me to do some mods to it before I begin building.

BTW, if I ever get a damned scanner, I'll photo my little project once it's complete and upload it somewhere to show it off.

Jark, you shouldn't lick technology, you'll get an electric shock. Then you won't be licking ANYTHING! How are you gonna explain THAT to the wife? lol.

oh but BoXXi a little electric shock every now and then it a wonderful thing, and helps to clear the mind.

Me wants one, at home and at work

Wow, would love to see your project misterME! Are you and MobiusCo furniture designers as well as skinners? I wish I had talents in that direction. In any case, what I find the most incredible in these workstation modules is the rotation feature! The studio I work in now has at least 180° of space susceptible of receiving strong sunlight at various intervals throughout the day so it would be great to be able to move accordingly. Jark, I'm with you on that one

Nope not a furniture designer, just never find what I want in the stores or at a price I would consider paying, so I find it more fun to take the time and put the effort into making my own. May have a few flaws in it, but ends up closer to what is really needed. Well back to shock theropy have fun....

I don't know if this is inportant, furniture discount, never buy List! Dealer price hovers around 50%, 50&10%, 50&20% Off. You guys looking for this for your company ownly need a savy buyer. However with conventional furniture systems you can get a 8'x 8' station with a hell of a lot more worksurface & storage, including a chair for around $6,000.00 with a bad discount.

Nope, not a furniture designer here either. In fact, I never would've dreamed of designing/building my own til a few months ago.

I'm a PC Tech turned Custom Audio Sound Installer; in the past few months, I've learned that I have a knack for design and implementation of some pretty complex custom work. Not to mention I've bought over $2000 in tools for these puproses (it'd be over $5000 if not for some hefty discounts...).

The foldable banquet table I use for a computer desk at home is a real eyesore, and I started shopping around. After seeing the prices, and the total lack of imagination in the design, of most retail furniture, I decided to build my own. I've already got a good in on buying some excellent lumber and supplies for great discounts (one of the techs that used to work for me now manages a Home Depot here and offerred to cut me some significant breaks).

I knocked out some initial designs on graph paper during the downtime when my PC hard-crashed. As soon as I find a good CAD program I can afford, I'll start transferring them over to digital.

My goal is to have the design done (and virtually tested) by the end of August, and the workstation built by the end of October.

The challenge will be in building it in a modular fashion, since I live in an apartment and will likely be moving a couple more times before I settle down and buy a house. The workstation has to be able to be easily disassembled and moved, without becoming rickety in the process.

I've been toying with the idea of building in the ability to rotate the base, but I doubt I'll be using any sort of mechanized process. It'll be strictly manual.

Blah, blah. I'm rambling...

misterME, since you're doing car audio work now I trust there'll be some use of actuators inside your new desk??? motorized keyboard tray? etc..

Where is it you're located? I'm always on the lookout for a good audio guy for my car for the more complex issues involved with it. (I'm capable of doing MOST projects by myself but there are certain things I'd leave to the pros - such as motorized amp racks below an enclosure or possibly alternate batteries and other major electrical upgrades...)

One of my good freind, saw a kick-ass, workstation like these, and CAD'ed his own.
After it was all said in done, He lumbered it out, for $400, and when he was done, it looked like a million and change.

Been in Architecture for nearly 30 years, so, needless to say, I'll be building my own, too.....once all these mongrels stop annoying me with their houses to design. My current 'workstation' dates back to '87....a hurried set-up after moving house....still haven't replaced it...

I'd thought of doing some neat things with actuators, but like I said, my focus is on (in order):

1. Comfort (I spend hours in front of this damn machine)
2. Asthetics (its has to stand out and say, "I'm beautiful!")
3. Integrity (it has to be dis-/re-assembled without getting weak)
4. Portability (it has to be light, modular)

With all that in mind, I'm shying away from motors and actuators. Once I'm in a house that I own, I may replace some of the modules with actuated or motorized versions.

Of course, I am thinking of doing some small-scale actuator work in the seat itself. I was actually thinking of scouring a few junkyards for an abandoned power bucket seat from a european car. The biggest issue there is, again, weight. But if I make it fully detatchable, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

BTW, RobbieRob, I'm down here in Columbia, SC, at least for a little while longer. Though I may not yet be your man. Remember, I have only a few months experience. I'm picking it up pretty fast, and think I have a talent for it, but I'm not sure how much I'd let someone else trust my solo work at this point. I'll be calling in a lot of favors and getting a lot of help on my little project; and ultimately, I'll be the only one who has to live with the consequences should I make a mistake.

As for the cost, I've set aside about $700, which should cover the cost of the lumber and the plastic and fiberglass trimmings and coverings, paint, polyurehtane, and other assorted materials. Fortunately, between myself and my co-workers, there's not a tool we don't have (or have access to) amongst us.

That's okay. I won't be needing advice and/or work done involving anything above my skills level for some time yet. I'm going to focus on some asthetic looks and power modifications to my car before finishing up the multimedia in it...so you'll have a while to gain more and more experience so when I am ready, you'll be the man to come to!

I've got this gizmo here:

http://www.ikea-usa.com/product_presentation/show.asp?ProductNumber=00005091&type=III

Found it in the 25% off section at the local Ikea. That picture there really does it no justice. I added matching side attachments to both sides (like the single one's shown) to house a printer, scanner, PocketPC, and the computer itself where the printer is there in that picture. It's the best desk/workstation I've ever used, although it's no Poetic workstation, it's enough to make me one of the "Alpha Geeks" around these parts

And really, how can you go wrong with something that is named "The Jerker"
