What a difference some bandwidth makes

Normally, the top skin authors have 3,000 downloads or so.

Yesterday, the top 3 skin authors had 17,000 downloads of their skins in a single day.

Today's stats won't be quite that impressive since we were down 6 hours due to the power outage in Livonia (the UPS's worked long enough for us to do an orderly shut down at least) but I bet the numbers are pretty high.

Mormegil's 7,120 skin downloads in a day is staggering though. Treetog getting almost 7,000 is also incredible. The community is certainly growing as fast as the bandwidth.

That said, we're almost certainly going to have to soon require accounts to download after the user has downloaded 1 megabyte of skins. This way a casual user can still try out some skins without an account but after a megabyte they'll need an account.

The skin authors who are creating these incredible things should be proud of their accomplishments.

If, for instance, Mormegil or Treetog's skins were an application, in 7 days they would have 50,000 downloads. This would make them in the top 50 most popular downloads on C-net.

In a month, 200,000 or the size of a medium sized city.

Now finally the question - are these massive download numbers due to more peopel being in the community or because the quality of skins over the past couple of years has increased? Or some other reason?

Or everybody has been having computer problems and were forced to reformat. Hehehe! (I shouldn't laugh, there are indeed a few of those).

Skinning apps have come a long way in the last two years. Certainly one factor has to be the polish and professionalism of products like WindowBlinds and IconPackager. This has broadened their appeal and legitamized them to a much larger market.
Perhaps it's a case of products finally reaching a "critical mass". Now their growth may be exponential.

Hehe, Paxx. I'm one of those.

Fortunately, while my OS took a complete nosedive, my secondary data drive made it through unscathed. So I just went in and saved my entire Object Desktop directory, and I didn't lose any of the skins I DL'ed. Now to get in installed again...

3 reasons....more skin awareness, better quality skins/proggies, and faster net access/modems/etc...

Brad, unfortunatly I must to say that those numbers are not real.
I can say that because coincidently, I was on line at WICust at the time that the counters should be reseted to the new day and for some reason, this doesn't happened.
So, the truth is, that dll numbers, were for 2 acumaulated days.

Draginol, I may be blind which is not a shock, but I was wondering what the total data transfer for wincustomixe is for a week. Just an average. There is all the talk about the hits and downloads but I think the actually gigs of transfer would be mindblowing to know. This may be in other threadz but I have yet to see it.
Thanks

Treetog - ah okay.

WinCustomize did about 3 terrabytes of bandwidth last month.

We did some analysis today of bandwidth use:

20% on thumbnails
20% on the general HTML on the pages
60% on downloads
