Two questions about Fences Pro

Hello, I am having a few issues with Fences pro and am looking for some help. The first issue is probably the biggest. I an unable to update. Fences Pro came free with my HP ENVY 17 3D laptop, and it's not listed in Impulse. Impulse gives me the option to download a free version of Fences, but not to update Fences Pro. How am I able to update (My current version is 1.01.4945 OEM)? The second is less of a problem, but it's still an issue for me. When using Aero Peek in Windows 7 (hovering the cursor over the show desktop button in the taskbar), the icons and fences disappear from the desktop, even though they are set to show. When dragging something to the desktop, (drag onto the show desktop button until all windows minimize) the icons hide themselves and I have to double-click to unhide them. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks for your help.

My version has a check for updates in the "About" section. Does yours and if so, have you tried it?

That's where I found about the update from. When I click Check for Updates, it finds the update and instructs me to use Impulse to download it. But like I said, the program doesn't appear in Impulse because it came with my computer. At the top of the about screen where yours says "Stardock Fences Pro," mine says  "Fences Pro for HP."

Sounds to me as if Impulse is not detecting your version of Fences or your registration. That might be due to an account registration problem with your version of Fences...I simply don't know as your post is the first of this type that I've seen.

You could try "Reset Data" in Preferences. If this does not cause Impulse to detect your version of Fences you will need to contact support@stardock.com for help. They work M-F, 9-5. Don't expect more than a computer generated response over the weekend, and send the email just once as more will reset you to the back of the queue.

Good luck, and please let us know how this was resolved, :)

Update: I managed to get Impulse to detect the program by adding it manually, but now Impulse can't find a license. It tells me that my registration is not valid, so I still can't update. The problem is that I don't have any registration info - it was free with the computer...

Contact Stardock support and supply your info to them. Fences Pro should be recognized by Impulse unless there's some glitch with Impulse.

Since it came OEM, Support should be the ones to deal with it.

This is getting a little bit ridiculous. I sent Stardock the email the Saturday before Christmas (on the 18th), and I still haven't received any reply from them on the 27th.

SD is closed for the holidays.  They'll bust a move to handle tickets on their return.  Be sure NOT to update yoru case because it sets you to the end of the queue.

So is there an answer for this?

I bought a new PC from my father and was trying to update his HP OEM version of Fences Pro, but ran into the same problem.

Thanks.

Hey! I have a solution!

Ok so under Impulse click the File Menu to reveal the drop down. Then select "Detect Application", next make sure "Software" is selected in the first drop down and then in the second select "Fences Pro". Now in the source path field this is where it can be a little confusing.

If you are running 64 bit Windows, point it to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Fences Pro

The same should apply to 32 bit Windows Installations. In short make sure that it is pointing to the Fences Pro directory.

After it detects it, you can update it. However don't try to update it through the "My Software" tab. Instead click the File Menu and select "Check for Updates". Eventually a new tab will open and you will see that there is an update for Fences Pro (if applicable to your system). Then in the top right corner sort of near the tabs you'll see a button that reads "Update All". Click "Update All", Fences Pro will NOW update. Once install is done, you'll be prompted to reboot.

You must follow those update steps in order to update Fences Pro for HP! After that though, you should be able to apply updates directly through the Fences Pro software.

Same here, I have fences pro installed on my new Laptop, installed Impulse, it detected the software, searched an update and it was found but when I want to actually download the update it ask me for a serial which of course I don't have because non was provided and refuses to download.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you, it does get recognized by impulse but it ask me for a serial to download the update when obviously I don't have one.

I am not 100% sure, but in general OEM copies would require support from the OEM that supplied the product not the application developer.

Without a serial or purchase record Impulse is not going to install any updates and OEM copies probably do not qualify for any updates not supplied from the OEM in question.  OEM copies are almost certainly different to non OEM copies and in this case are probably locked to HP computers only unlike the non OEM copies which use product activation.

Sounds like that could be right, Neil. I was hoping Support could check whether that was the case and maybe let us know here in Forums so we can give better guidance.

Thank you for your response, that makes sense, unfortunately on HP website there is no updated software, I was hoping I could get the update only because the full version is already installed, OEM of course.

Thank you for your support.

Hey All

I got in touch with Stardock. They will not provide updates . . . said to talk to HP . . .  who will not provide updates. There is no serial number to register the software.  I tried the solution provided by StandardtsDT . . . it does detect, but still need a valid registration number or the update fails.

This is an old teaser trick. Drug dealers use it too . . . get you hooked & you'll want to buy, if you are weak.

So we all have three choices (unless someone really smart :

1. Do nothing.  Advantage: You will have pretty "Fences"   Disadvantage: Your IE9 will fail continuously, especially if you try to download anything.

2. Uninstall Fences.  Advantage: Your IE9 should work now.  Disadvantage: You will not have pretty "Fences"

3. Buy Fences Pro.  Advantages: You will have pretty "Fences" and your IE9 will work (and you will be able to download future updates to Fences Pro when they screw things up for your browser again next time.)   Disadvantages: You will be out $19.95 for a product you thought really, really was a (non-temporary) working part of the $1600.00 laptop you bought.  You will feel cheated . . . paying full price for a product you were tricked into using (pre-installed) . . . without even so much as a "update to a fully supported version for only $9.95 for HP product user." Finally, you will continue to encourage bad behavior on the part of both computer manufacturers and software peddlers.

I, frankly, am tired of all this. The choice is yours, but I recommend #3.  I wanna be free.

There should be an option to update the software, even if it came with the computer, whether at increased cost or not.  Most such pre-loaded apps are promotional - either slightly crippled versions or time-limited trials, with an option to buy a discounted full version or extended subscription, which the OEM's are then no longer responsible for.  OEM's are usually responsible for support for the pre-installed OS, but you're still able to update it through Microsoft.

I would hope this was an oversight in the deal Stardock did with HP.  Pre-loaded Fences should be a great introduction to Stardock's apps.  Instead it has created, in this case, a poor impression of a great company.  A more elegant path to an updatable version would have been in Stardock's interest.
