Would you recommend Elemental?

Would you recommend Elemental?

Hi I read the initial reviews, I saw Frogboys response, I wanted to ask now would people recommend the game as is?

Even stood up for Brad on Gamasutra once before  - when Demigod hiccuped a lil.

About me

Loved Sins. wasted hours on Gal Civ II and enjoy engrossing strat games that dont require the selling of my soul... eg. I can pause to spend time with kids.

Recently played Empire TW and Civ V, got through 2campaigns of later, loved city building and upgrading, research etc but found the modern era left me drained of all emotions... it was bare/stark/dull. TW also feels like its lost the Soul that made Shogun/Rome great.

I dont have loads of money (2 kids and a wife) I just want an interesting game to play.

Thanks

I'm going to get Elemental...as it is when I get it (most likely this weekend via Impulse).

When a patch arrives, I'll get it.

When an expansion arrives, I'll get it.

If I notice something bugging me, or my game crashing, I know I'll have the patience and will overcome such problems when developers give me the means to do so.

But the tactical battles are so fundamentally flawed in design, I will be amazed if they ever approach being good.  I would want the devs to start over, instead of making tweaks to the Tactical combat.

Didn't I just read somewhere that they were doing just that?

(After some searching) Seems like you might get your wish. In the beta changelog Frogboy said

I don't like the current tactical battle system but it does work as designed.  Because we don't like it, we're are providing a budget for the development team to make a new one in the first expansion pack.  But a whole new tactical battle system isn't the type of thing you "patch".

Similarly, I would like to see leveling up be more interesting but the current leveling system is as designed.  But we too would like to create a new one and that would be the kind of thing we'd put in the first expansion as well.

It basically boils down to the scope of the feature.

Great news that somehow went largely unnoticed (afaik). We'll have to wait for the expansions but still, there might be a new combat system!

BTW, I see a lot of people in this and other threads talking about the free expansions. Didn't that deal end last month?

I agree with Xia.  This game is really bland right now.  Even if we get real good AI, the game is still going to be really bland.  There needs to be a hook.  If you look at successful franchises like Diablo, HOMM, WOW, and Civ and ask yourself "what have they got that I ain't got?", the answer is "courage"... oh wait, that's from Wizard of Oz.  What they've got is some hook...

With Diablo, they have the concept of common/uncommon/unique/rare items.  How many hours did you spend trying to find the coolest weapon or armor out there?  Not to mention there were socketed items you could make even cooler.  The other thing Diablo had was a skill tree for the sovereign.  How many hours did you spend on getting just one more level so you could add another point to your skill tree?

With HOMM more of the same... skill trees for your heroes.  By the way, HOMM also has way better movement across the map and easier/faster/cleaner tactical battles, but let's save that for another discussion.

With WOW, you had many interesting quests and skill trees!  How many hours have you spent fishing just to get your fishing skill up?

With Civ, it seems I'm more willing to hit that end of turn button for an interesting technology finally being researched or an interesting building/wonder finally getting built ... on second thought, those aren't really "hooks", just things that Civ does better than EWoM.

So I guess to sum up, we need common/uncommon/unique/rare/set items, skill trees for our sovereigns/champions, and lots of interesting quests.

Quests definitely need to be done.  Unique items/unique features REALLY is needed (FFH2 had this, so Kael knows how to do it).

Skill trees might be overcomplication.  This isn't Din's Curse/Torchlight/Diablo.
