AIIEE!! Ratings, Moderations, everywhere!

Suddenly all our skins have ratings. So YOUR winamp skin that you put so much work in and is getting so many downloads (it was heading for the top!) suddenly gets a 6 rating and disspaperas from most people's query results. Sunddenly your winskimp skin is getting 4 downloads a day as opposed to 80 d/ls per day, no exceptions.

EVEN THOUGH THOSE 80 PEOPLE A DAY REALLY WANT YOUR SKINS, an algorithm that couldn't hold it's own with a gnat in a game of chess is making the descision that most people don't need to see your skin, EVEN though it's a proven HIT. If your Wallpaper is in the top ten, then it gets a ten by definition. etc.

A skin on this site may be rated poorly because it lacks artisitic merit (clouds); however it may provide exactly what the customer wants on his desktop (clouds).

We gotta not screw that pooch. If the potentially most successful skin drops off the list because it's not artistic, that's a loss. We're saying: "Yes you really want that skin, but the artist's peers have determined that the skin is not artistic enough, so even though you RRREEEEEALAALLLLLLYYYYYY want it... ya can't have it.

I rated a lot of skins tonight. I think all of this is VERY COOL, and VERY USEFUL.

But I have this problem (it's an ego thing I admit):

When I have skin that is flying up the charts WITHOUT ratings, consistently, i think the work has established itself. In otherwords winampskinXX4 is responsible 1450 d/ls per day. So it don't matter if it's peer rated 3. Make sure everyone sees it because its a popular hit.

I.E. if a mod has >x d/ls show it dispite the peer rating. (Those peer raters are probably on crack at the moment... they're ususally nice fellows.)

Overall this is a GOOD thing. Just needs tweaking'

What I want to see is quality. There's this divide between the target audience as those that make the skins and those that use them. Though this site is aimed at the second group, the rating system is targeted towards the first group.

Anyway, the original idea behind ratings was to cut down on bandwidth by showing less skins by default.

Hey, people that want to see skins with all ratings can still say they want to in their profiles. I want to see high rated skins, I set the number higher. I want to see all skins I can set that too. This should encourage you to make skins that get rated higher if the download count is what matters to you.
btw: all my walls are rated 5 and below

I set the filter so I can see them all....it's the only way that they can all be compared in order to be 'rated' appropriately.
Recently I went through all of the Wallpapers...and looked at them all....rating all that had no rating, and many others I hadn't seen till then that evoked an opinion one way or another.
Since it is an averaging system...the more votes the better...it ain't appropriate to load your score just because you think it is currently wrong, but what you think of it if it were the ONLY score.
If everyone did that, no-one should have any real issue with the system....but like anything...ya gotta be in it to win it...

BTW...try to resist the temptation to rate your own...[prolly doesn't even let you]...

Well, well, it's a shame, isn't it?
If you want to fight it: go over the poorly rated skins, and if you feel they deserve more, rate it yourself a 10 or so, so it may boost its score a little.

Funny thing is it's essentially what I was asking for earlier... just a shock at first, that's all.

good point.....i've never even tried to rate my own....i wonder if you can or not?

i rate every piece that i comment on....i sit, look, ponder....then rate/comment......or not! ...that's the proper way to do it i think

...as for the topic of this thread...well i've forgotten what i was going to say now

I set my preferences to see everything. I guess I'm worried that, like charmed said, I'd miss out on something good. I'd rather see them all and make my own conclusions.
