WinAmp 3 boycotted?

I'm amazed and aghast! I just got through reading some of the comments on DeviantArt regarding the latest WinAmp3 skin submissions. Unbeknownst to me, there is an entire subculture of people who actually like all of the confines and restrictions of WinAmp2. Indeed, they are so enraptured by the 275x116 rectangle that they won’t ever make the leap to WinAmp3 and its free-form skinning. How many others are there? I thought I’d start an informal poll to see what others thought…

From what I've heard, the problem is, WinAmp 3 is too big to use and too complicated to skin.

I must confess I use WinAmp 2 still. When I want to listen to MP3's, I want to use something tiny. If I'm going to use something big I'djust stick with Media Player.

I wonder if they realize alpha 7 of Winamp3 will support Winamp2.x skins?

dont listen to anyone but the dude outside your window screaming the lyrics to "I Write The Songs" by Barry Manilow.

Definitely don't listen to jark....

WinAMP also takes longer to load, slower playlist editing, slower... yah yah, it's beta/alpha, but that doesn't mean it's going to get 10x faster.

Free form skinning has its costs...

Yeah Jark, that make the whole world sing. I am with you man.

I'm not boycotting it, I'm just waiting for a final version. Then I'll give the software a real trial, and I'll look and see if I would like to skin it.
But I don't lose my time on alpha/beta software.

the "loyalty" in the subculture to the little rectangle is real, dude. it always bugged me that the most popular mp3 player in the world was not freeform, but thats how it is.

crae's "sheep" comment is probably pretty accurate. There are those among us who work Really Well within that confine, and it is for sure, a "subculture".

a confusing little metaphor for the whole genre of skinning actually.
here is this great art form with (in most cases) no limitations.
then, heres this really really poular program with All Sorts of limitations to the skin protocol...
and it's sooooooooooooo popular.....

and there you have it.

Kenray....those same limitations are what makes it great.....making it hard to be truly different and original. Free-form skinning may be harder in format, but easier in creative individuality, so WinAMP wins-out...

Well, I personnally do not agree with Jafo's ppint because I personnaly think all Winamp skins look the same, no matter how hard the artists try to make it look different. Always the same layout, always the same functions.
Winamp is a good player, and I use it. But I never downlod any Winamp skin. I use the plain default look, because I can't see why bother, they're all the same.

Maybe all the same in layout, but the default skin??? What have you done with the real paxx? I thought we didn't 'do' defaults...

"Look, I'm so 1337 now, 'cos I skinned WinAmp. Made this nifty Britney Spears skin for it. Hell no, I won't try a truly freeform player, there's no skill in that"

It's the same as people who have been in jail for ages. The outside world is strange and complex for them. Now jail is pretty easy. Be nice to the guards, stay away from those guys and for the rest of it, others decide what you do. Outside you have to decide yourself what you want to do, make your own decisions.

Scary!

Paxx....some of mine are decidedly different....a couple of them I lost cos they were too 'different' and I couldn't find them again....

/me runs off now to skin QCD with Britney....

Jafo,

I respect the creative work that is done within the confines of the Winamp Jail, but those confines aren't what makes it popular, i don't think...

Lets be for real, for a lot of skinners, it's the downloads that count, what the papers call "egoboo".

you could do the worlds greatest Coolplayer skin and get 1000 downloads over a week, while jafos new "BritneyAmp" will get fifty thousand downloads the first day.

that is where winamp, wins out, in my humble opinion.

Give people too much freedom and they freak out cause they do not know how to handle it. They like the security of having "safety walls" and don't tend to try and push beyond the limitations.

The real irony, people want the freedom to change things (skin them), but only to a certain point... anything beyond established boundries is jumping too much into the "unstructured"... People fear the unknown.

That's not strictly true, Buzz...at least not in my case....the two main proggies I screw with are WinAMP and LiteSTEP, and I think you have to agree only ONE of those is structured, while the other is VERY definitely free-form and unstructured. So it ain't fear of the unknown that has me skinning WinAMP, and I don't even think I have any of mine on their site so I doubt I'm trawling for downloads....[for that I'd have to replace the trans bits with Britney's tits].
I just happen to like the challenge of proving you can be individual in style in such a regulated format...and some people [not many] actually seem to agree that mine are a 'bit different'....although some child on Deviant claimed 'Blame Maxim' was 'old-hat', so I explained it was 3 years old in the making, and that mine was one of the first to delve into transparency to any real degree.
Now, admittedly, WinAMP 'photoskins' of nubile wenches will be as popular and prolific as their equivalent in Wallpapers, and we can all agree that they rarely show any real creativity, but that is merely a fault of a program's popularity and ability to be simple, but as I said, free-form skin formats don't preclude Britney's tits from being emblazoned across them, in fact, it could make it even easier...you already have the 'knobs' for two controls....hehe...
