I've been playing for awhile now.. I think most of my techs are up to level 7 or so and I've built every building possible.
Yet every time I go to the store to get gear I see no better than a staff!?!
I'm playing Kingdom. I also seem to have a real dearth of montsters/quest locations/even inn's...
Something seems wrong..
magic tech will unlock all those amulets which can buff a guy up quickly if you have 2k gildar to blow. I think the medical pack is a very useful item: +5 health and +1 HP regeneration per round, can't go wrong with that. I don't know right off-hand which tech unlocks it. Horses are very useful if the game speed wasn't broken by them in Tac Battles.
When you reach a new level in a tech a list of possible upgrades will pop up. There is a description for each one and in the description it will list any new weapons or armor. You can only pick one upgrade on the list. If you pick an upgrade that has new weapons or armor (or horses or items) it should show up in the store. You can also upgrade your unit design with the new tech. You must be in your own territory to go into the store.
The tech description will also tell you which upgrades will give you new places to explore.
I don't remember the name of the upgrades, but generally warfare will give you new weapons and armor and adventure will give you new places to explore.

When I've been leveling up, I haven't been 'picking' anything... Ooops...
But still in the civilization tech, I've been getting a alot of new buildings... So it must auto pick if you don't???
There are a couple of bugs where if you do something when the tech chooser pops up, it won't let you pick the tech or the new tech line. If you want new weapons, you can open up the tech window, either from the button on the very bottom or from the button in the kingdom overview browser and select the warfare tech path. This is one way to get new weapons. There is an alternate route which is the quest/goodie hut route. As you level your adventure techs, new quests and goodie huts will emerge, giving the possibility of conferring special weapons and armors like +2 longswords, etc.
Not only all of that stuff, about picking warfare upgrades, but questing is a good idea too. At level two or three quest levels I started finding good sheilds and some armor to use. Not a lot of stuff, but I'm only outfitting my champs anyway.
Another thing about warfare upgrades I just thought of, though: certain upgrades are nearly necesary. Like bows for instance. Dominated the entire map because right now, I'm the only one with archers. Also you want broadswords and leather armor. In my opinion, unless you're fighting catapults, once you have those three things you're good for a while and can focus on other technologies.
