Biggest flop of 2010?

But least surprising

After all of the discussion over the failure of Demigod and this company's inability to deal effectively with its never-ending cycles of problems and failed fixes, the fate of Elemental was emminently predictable. Too bad, I remember having some high hopes for it. There's a strong temptation to say "I told you so", but nobody's listening anyway.

Wow; although I don't like insulting people, when I saw the first response I just said to myself, "Yup!"

Vindictive much? Give Stardock a chance. Yes Elemental has its issues, they have been discussed to death on these forums.

This is not some 2-bit developer under the leash of a multi-million dollar publisher however. Stardock does not make games for monetary gains, but out of passion. They made a brand new game engine just for Elemental, and they had a very ambitious design. The game might not currently be at the original vision Brad and the team has had for the game but given time, I think we will have a classic turn-based game on our hands that will be remembered in years to come as Civilization and Master of Magic are known as now.

I mean for crying out loud apart from the excellent patch support we have been getting, we will be getting two expansions for free as thanks from Stardock for putting up with the game in its growing stages. An apology does not get more substantial than that.

To be able to say, "I told you so," you would have to have actually told us how this was going to play out.  You didn't.  We also failed to get telepathic flashes, empathic quivers, or even an email warning us.  So yeah, you are sounding pretty much like you missed some meds today, your highness.

I don't think so.

Seen much worse games out there this year.

You're saying Elemental is even a contender for the year's biggest flop? LOL - see APB. Nothing beats that.

I dunno.  You should look at how Stargate Worlds pretty much died this year.  Ponzi schemes, a CEO who was basically hiring additional wives, and all sorts of madness coming from MMongul.  Reading about it soaked up a good 2-3 hours.  Totally nuts.

But yeah, for a game that was actualy released, APB was stunningly brief.  I've not even seen that much whining about it - I think everyone was stunned into silence.

EDIT: APB = All Points Bulletin which was an MMO where everyone looked pretty

Yeah, APB must be the Fail of the year. Shortest lived MMO to date.

And it looked really great. A shame.

Hehe I was thinking the same thing when reading the headline of this thread...

Well, I think that before calling it a flop, the game should be dead... and this game is all but dead :).

Elemental wasn't really a 'big' game but it certainly was my biggest gaming dissapointment of 2010 by a country mile. Usually things like that don't bother me (long-awaited Dragon Age wasn't what I expected but it was still a good game) but I imported the game at quite a higher expense than usual (with an additional £13.60 customs fee), so I'm somewhat less reasonable when it comes to Elemental.

Looking at the guy, his experience with Stardock was Demigod then Elemental.  I can understand his rage.

I've noticed a trend with the ragers- very few of them were GCII or Sins players, most of them are new to Stardock.   Makes sense that those who have seen the good side of Stardock are considerably more patient then those who haven't.

It's not a flop by any means (E:WoM), but it was a bad release.

A game which i actively played for some 100-120 hours cannot possibly be a flop. Flawed, yes, and with lots of untapped potential, but fun and addictive nonetheless, much more so than many AAA titles i played this year were.

But since you refer to 'after all the discussion' in your original post, and not 'after all the time i spent playing it'...

Well, disappointment - yes, 'flop' - no.

Its like the only game I actually waited to be released in second part of the year (first was dedicated to waiting for DF 2010), and was following dev journal for a while. Brad's posts tricked me into believing that EWoM would be most awesome fantasy 4X to the date, and, well, it wasn't.

Altho I don't think game is dead yet. There's still a chance that expansions will hit the FUN spot and become something worth playing over and over. Plus there's a chance they will implement proper modding support with ability to override game mechanics and implement custom AI, so I could make it fun for myself.
