I'd need 3D icons for it. Can somebody make them?

Because I'm not sure whether it's sarcasm or simply poorly worded ("never attribute malice where you can ignorance", as the saying goes). The second question sounds like you're asking how much someone should pay you to make the icon for you.

Another approach might be this: is the icon user definable or are you looking for new default ones. Case one means someone has to be dedicated to make those new default icons, so the ess-vid approach might me handy there. Case two means it is user definable, so then it's up to the user to make those icons (without any obligation to share that with the world).

Besides, what kind of format do those icons have anyhow?

Saw that, but that's an unknown format to me. Waht is it? is it a basic textfile or do you need special software to make it?

if you just wanted to incorporate existing icons into your program, i think it woudl be fair to offer US$20 for each one, or make soem kinda package purchase from a designer.
Since the proposed designer has already done hte work, offering soem less for them is fine, because there's no additional output form the artist, you are liscensing intellectual property.

and i think ess's quote on the icons @ US $50 is fair...

Read the interview with ess vid in Teknidermy issue #4

vastly entertaining

heheh, my interview was OK... only problem with it I saw was the timing... you can't tell that it was a three hour chat on IRC, so things said after a couple minutes of silence look like I said them immediately after. Makes me sound far too impatient :>

ess-vid:

my offer:
-you make 3d icons and you can ask money for it
-you put a link on your site to my site
-you are not allowed to intervene what code I
put in tridcomm

-I make tridcomm capable of handling 3d icons
in .an8 format
-I put a link on my site to your site
-I don't ask money for your 3d icons
-I don't ask money for tridcomm
-I am not allowed to intervene what kind of 3d
icons you make

Eh? Sorry , never said that I specifically would take the job. I have a couple of big projects I'm working on right now so I'm not really taking on anything that doesn't pay at least a few hundred dollars. Likely someone else will pick it up though, if you state a dollar amount on the pay.

this guy does outstanding icons at around $25 an icon but worth it, I myself never had any work done by him but I use to talk to him about a year ago...
his name is Igarashi Susumu and here is his website:

ess-vid:"I have a couple of big projects I'm working on right now so I'm not really taking on anything that doesn't pay at least a few hundred dollars. "

what I pitty; I could follow all your arguments and agreed [there were some parts for an interessting (ongoing & endless) discussion though]. But this comment is so irritating. Where all the others said u should have just said NO or ignored tridcomms post I actualy understood your point, but here, I'm sorry, u should have just said NO.

U actualy placed your self on an higher level looking down on little tridcomm. Poor u. Even though I understand your motivation doing so. very poor ess-vid. maybe its just the words...

Well I'm not an artist, I'm more on the technichal part of it, but I still like to skin; however, therefore I'm very interessted in those small programmers, even though I team up with u talking about 3D stuff. Look at Objectbar (yes my fav) or 545-studios...

and sometimes u might find another [interlectual - in your terms] ppl u might not have to shout at to make them listen (or understand).

However to please u. I learned something from u today reading your posts, as with every sentence u read [communication u know] u learn.

NOTE
I didn't say tridcomm is little
and
I didn't mean ess-vid IS on a higher level
!!!

I understand ess-vids motivation saying he has to much work already and therefore if it isn't worth the money he'd not be willing to do more. But I don't like the way he sayed it!

Hmm? I see no problem with my statement. It's the truth. Let's see what I'm working on:

- Doing a complete redesign and relaunch of CleffieNET (my site), which involves rewriting a lot of the content such as the FAQ and designing the site engine (which will be dynamic and have a few neat features).
- Planning out several articles, references, and tutorials.
- Gearing up to begin the first of my "megatutorials", on Kaleidoscope (basically these tutorials will be book-sized reference materials that walk you through the subject and give you as much detail as possible).
- Writing some forum software.

There are more, but you get the idea. A lot of these I've been messing with for months, and I want to get them done now and move on to new things. So no, I'm not on the lookout for anything that's not going to at least pay enough for me to handle some expenses. I don't consider myself "above" his job, I just simply don't have time for it at that level of pay.

Congrats to tridcomm for handling this very mature. Basic dividing line: those who think of this whole (desktop custo) thing as fun, those who want some bucks (or anything, those who don't feel credit for helping is enough). That's a basic thing, a call for discussion on Wincustomize as a whole all the time, but we should just learn to ignore the "other" stream, let it live, don't discuss...

kenray:

format is .an8 which can be produced by anim8or which is a freeware 3D editor downloadable from www.anim8or.com. I chose anim8or because it can import (and export) 3ds, lightwave and wavefront formats.

You don't have to install tridcomm to make 3d icons but you have to install anim8or (at least for converting your existing 3d stuff). Tridcomm will only contain the directory of the 3d icons in its .ini file. Icons will be external to tridcomm (as its background picture).

As I said I won't pay for anything but if you want you can sell your 3d icons for tridcomm if you want.

Please notice tridcomm is not handling external .an8 objects right now. Coding is ongoing. You can download tridcomm's preview version (0.9test) to see how 3d icons will look like on top of the bars representing files. In this version three 3d icons are built in to tridcomm (converted from 3ds format to .c files by anim8or). Only .txt, .dll, and .exe files have 3d icon in this version.

I plan to have 3d objects in tridcomm for the layout of files (presently its a plane only).
Maybe there will be 3d command button bar, listboxes and menus too but it's the future. Probably I will do a 3d traceroute function before 3d buttons etc.

Regarding money:
Maybe I will sell those 3d button bars, menus, listboxes as visual components for other programs.
