Dell dock does not accept shortcut drag & drop

I just installed dell dock on my Windows7 Dell XPS 410.

In spite of what the instructions say, I cannot just drug & drop a shortcut from my desktop into a category or to the top level of the dock.

I tried to run the dosk in admin mode but at no avail. No error is displayed, only a no-entry icon.

Any help would be appreciated.
