Is there a way to retreat from tactical battle

My girlfriend got stuck in a battle she could not win, she tried to retreat to the glowing area around the battlefield but it does not seem to work, she can't simply enter the glowing area.

It would also be interesting to have a retreat button for resolving auto-battles.

there are cases where retreat is not possible ... in some cases only certain "glowing areas" work for side.. at least I think I have encountered this..

Also, only champions/sovereigns can retreat. For other units, it's basically Thunderdome: win or die.

Yes.  Run towards the light near the edges.  After 4-5 units escape, your morale his 0 and who ever is left is done for.
