Why can't I speak to some NPCs

from Elemental Forums

Could anyone explain what I need to be able to speak to NPCs?

Most of the time at the beginning of a game, I get the 'speak' icon with a red cross through it. A Lore Master, for example, appears, but I cannot interact.

 

Any suggestions?

If you do not have enough money alot of times they wont speak to you. Probably should switch this to a screen that simply informs you ya cant make it worth for them to join up yet.

Even better would be "I'd join you if you had xxx gildars" so you know what you're aiming for.

Been wondering that myself.  I assume my sovereign doesn't meet some prerequisite, but I have no idea what.

Select the NPC. Click the action tab. Hover over the greyed out handshake icon. The tooltip will tell you exactly why you can't talk to them.

The Recruit button tooltips tells you how much you need to recruit him if you actually lack the needed funds.

Yeah, this really needs improvement. When you get the "denied" icon the tooltip needs to be popping up with the reason why.

 I had no idea you even had to pay them to join you. They never ask me for money they just say "Hey I would like to join you".

Janusk is the only one you can recruit for free.  The others usually say something like, "I will gladly assist you in your rise to power for 27 gildar."

Also your Level in Adventure may be too low.
