"Cloth Map" tactical battles for the hardware impaired

My wife won't let me invest in a good computer.  Still, I feel that I deserve to play this game.  And I'm able to play the strategic portion on the cloth map (just as I play GalCiv2 in the zoomed out map).  But I think I am missing way too much by having to autoresolve all the tactical battles.  I would be *super* happy if there were an option for a basic, chessboard tactical battle that completely skimped on the graphics.

I autoresolve every battle almost, but I feel for you. If it's kind of close I hop in to take advantage of defense tiles, although I think the AI does this well(Brad said this somewhere I believe)

Any word on this?  I too would love to see Cloth Map Battles even though it runs fine on my system.  I just love the look of it over the regular graphics.
