I just bought the game and cant play it. I tried a custom game and campaign. when I try to build my first city the game crashes. I tried starting new games a few times, its always the same. when I go to build my first city it crashes. Game is unplayable.

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and link the contents into a post here via pastebin. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.
The file can be found in My Documents\My Games\Elemental
Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug log will be erased and recreated for the new session.
If there was a dump zip created in C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic on Windows XP), please post that too.

Try getting the latest video drivers from intel's website, yours are from 2007.
Ive tried updating my video driver and reinstalling the game via impulse. nothing fixes the problem.
just updated and i got the same error when updating as the last patch. still crash when i build a city.
Are you sure you've gotten the latest ones? DirectX is still reporting them as March 2009 in that debug. Nvidia's most recent Vista drivers are from last month.
I turned off my anti virus and firewall and uninstalled the game. reinstalled it and got the "Installs game definition files for elemental has stopped working" error again. Ive tried everything but the game is still unplayable.
