Not sure what other details/logs I need to provide that will help resolve the issue. The error is sometimes a DX error, other times "Elemental has stopped working" kind of error. Are we not meant to tab-out of the game, ever?
This issue returned when solving another (primarily ATI-based) issue recently. You can avoid it by using windowed mode, which will look the same as fullscreen at your desktop resolution, you just won't be able to edge-scroll. Your system info may help us track it down in the meanwhile.
Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and link the contents into a post here via pastebin. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.
The file can be found in My Documents\My Games\Elemental
Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug log will be erased and recreated for the new session.

Same problem. No other games have issues alt+tabbing for me, just GalCiv2 and Elemental. :/
With GC2 I can tab out and back if I don't leave the game for too long and it's fairly early in the game. If it's late game or I tab out for more than 30 seconds...forget it, game is toast.
Similar issue for me. I'm using Windows 7 32-bit though, not 64. It doesn't crash every single time, but it does it quite frequently on an alt-tab in full screen.
Here's my debug file:
It pops up with a Fatal Error: DX Error: Invalid Call
Then it says Elemental: War of Magic has stopped working.
