Are people finding that the AI expands?

Saw post in another thread and am quite worried

I like playing on the largest maps available and so am playing a large map with 2 AI opponents as my initial foray into the game.

After about 100-150 turns I haven't met any AI units and assumed it was b/c they were far away or on other continents with no boat technology yet....

But I saw a post where someone said that in 400+ turns the AI still only had 1 (ONE!) city each (EACH!)

Are others experiencing this or does the AI expand?  I'm hoping there is a mistake here b/c if the AI doesn't expand the game is obviously unplayable.

????

My first game, the Kraxis (my closest neighbors) had 3 cities within 85 turns. Unfortunately, all that meant was that they had 3 very weak cities, so I took over 2, and then killed their sovereign. I had them set for normal AI.

The AI has been expanding in my games, so far.  In fact, one of them plopped his fifth city in the spot I was planning on putting my third.

I think having just 2 AIs on a large map is why you haven't run into anyone yet.

End of quote

They were most likely seeing minor races, who never expand (nor are they intended to).

It seems a bit random. I bumped into Gilden who had three cities at one point (circa turn 2 - 300), and at the same time I've also had Krax never form a city, and just hang around my border trying to bum money off me like some sort of beggar.

I discovered another kingdom on a small peninsula after i "accidentally" plopped down a city by the only entrance to that peninsula.
So he's been locked in there with his 1 city now for a good 100 turns :D

What? They added the ability to change what factions set up in the game?

I try to play two empires and two kingdoms on a small map and the game decides it's time to put another couple major factions in.

Just check that little graph thing on the lower right hand side of your game screen, it shows (if you met them) how powerful they are in relation to you.

Man... I'm getting surrounded by the AI in my game. One faction, the Redguard (from Elder Scrolls), has me surrounded on one side with a bunch of cities. Meanwhile, the Umbra, has me surrounded on the other side... and they are still growing.

I'd say you've only met minor factions.

I have had a mixed bag. I had Umber attack with himself and his wife against a well defended city but then I had Magnar (sp?) besiege my main city for turns on end hitting me hard. had my sovereign and most of my champions locked down there. I finally beat him back and am now sending a force after him. It was touch and go, especially when two of his sons lead a big force in with summoned creatures.
