Young People Can Be So Rude

I am currently in North Carolina. Yesterday I delivered a very heavy armored truck (I grossed over 110,000 lbs) to Camp Lejuene and am now waiting for them to find me a load out of here.

I walked inside the truck stop for a bit of late breakfast a little while ago. The food was ok. After eating I packed my pipe with tobacco. Due to the fascist smoking ban I didn't light up, intending to do so once I stepped outside. I walked up to the register with my pipe stuck in my kisser as I needed my hands free to handle paying the check.

The young lady at the register looked at me and said "That thing stinks, I can smell it from here". As I said, it wasn't even lit. I asked her "Are you getting paid to ring up the check or insult the customers?"

She was obviously oblivious to the rudeness of her unsolicited remark until I asked that question, and her face blushed with embarrassment as there were other people watching. She tried to apologize for her rude remark but I told her that in the future the best thing she could do was keep her opinions to herself and take care of the customers in a more professional manner.

I just don't understand where some of these young people get off spouting off to people, especially a customer whom they are supposed to be serving. Do they really think anyone and everyone actually cares about their silly little opinions? I know I certainly do not. They can save that crap for their Facebook page where someone may actually care.

I think that perhaps High Schools should be teaching a class or two in professionalism to prepare these young people for the workplace, because most of them have no clue what the word means.

Here's another example.  My daughter had an appointment at Planned Parenthood and while she was there the nurse/clerk informed her that her husband's girlfriend was pregnant!  My poor daughter was completely stunned - she didn't even know he had a gf.

I've known for a while that the younger generation doesn't know one of the most important rules about their opinions -- keeping them to themselves unless asked for them.

Yes, this young lady should have kept her thoughts and reaction to your pipe to herself. This was not the time nor the place to be frank with you.

In my view, that after being reprimanded by you, she recognized her rudeness (trespass against you) and tried to apologize says something good about her.

Sounds like a serious breach of ethics to me. The nurse had no business talking about another patient's medical condition with anyone.

No, she was just reacting out of embarrassment. I doubt she has any clue that she actually did anything wrong.
