What combat system would you favorite turn based game have?

Well since i missed the conversation when we decided what combat system will be in the game. I decided to give my 2 cents on what combat system i would like to see in the game.

I think the battles should be like demigod with the units you have stacked together spamming through the portals (barracks and field camp for this game). Imagine your created pikemen, archers, knights and others comming through the portals ( or in this game spawned from a field camp to kill your enemies. When sieging an enemy city you can actually destroy it with your siege equipment. The king could be a bad ass demigod that you can level and when he isn't with a group a default commander is spawned with generic powers selected when you create your faction. In the battles outside cities each team could have a field camp like the citadel in demigod with the goal to eliminate the other persons camp.

If you have no idea what im talking about play demigod the combat is balls out awesome and intense which i think would help mix up the turn based pace of the game with intense battles. I know this is probably to late to do something like this and tossing this in multi-player would make MP take too long( maybe do tactical in MP) but then again I just think it would be awesome in this game and if the game slips to next year (which i think it will) something like this might be able to be implemented.

...or maybe i just like demigod too much lol

What do you guys think? What battle system would your favorite game have in it?

You work for Stardock? o_O

I'm fine with Stardock's new approach so nothing to add.

Here's the thing...  Master of Magic had very short tatical battles primarily designed to get you back to the global strategy quickly.

However, Frog did not mention Master of Magic when discussing combat he mentioned XCom.  XCom had more indepth tatical battles that made you care about the units under your control.

*fingers crossed*

Contrary to what appears to be the favourite of mosts on these boards, I've always been a fan of the simple combat of Civilization, Alpha Centauri, GalCiv, etc, etc.

Can't saying I'm looking forward to the combat of Elemental, although it'll at least be tolerable now that it's turn-based.

The best part, for me, about X-Com (which is probably my favorite) is the destructible terrain.  I have always and always will prefer turn-based battles.  I loved the use of line of site and cover in the Jagged Alliance series.  Additionally, I like any system that allows for a unit's elevation to affect its ability to perform.

SO, how 'bout Elemental battles put all that together just for me.  Is that too much to ask?

Tactical Battles. Tactical battles haven’t been part of the beta but they’ve been heavily discussed. Originally, tactical battles were designed to be RTS. Then Continuous turns. But as time has gone on, it’s become clear that the gameplay that people (and frankly that we enjoyed the most) was more closest to XCom. That is, turn based. Tile based. Moving units to the best spots. And eventually working to have your units in spots that are easy to spot the enemy while they themselves are hard to find.

Whoa whoa whoa, what?   I know I missed a lot this last month or so when I've been busy with real life stuff and only checked the forums occasionally, but I had no idea tactical battles were changed to being turn-based. When did that happen? I'm actually kind of disappointed about this, I generally like RTS combat more.

Indeed, when I first read that I was thinking what the hell? When did that happen? Now I am aware certain people on the forums didn't like the RTS / Continuous turn possibility just like some people didn't like the tile / turn based system possibility for tactical combat but to my knowledge there hasn't been a decisive and conclusive argument either way. Brad, if I might suggest an official debate / vote on the subject to see if there is any conclusive feelings.

Obviously I'd prefer a RTS type of tactical combat.

We really can't do something like this as a vote. What we can do is make sure that modders can change it later on if they want to do so.

Bear in mind, we don't just put in fan requests willy nilly. We try them out ourselves. We concluded that it was kind of a "bait and switch" to have the main game be turn based and tactical battles become RTS. Especially since tactical battles aren't the main feature of the game (ala Total War)/.

If I am able to mod the battle system from tatical to RTS that is all i ask. If this is true the modding feature in this game looks to be very robust and the secret weapon to making this game great.
