Apparently the game doesn't allow me to have "Research Center" as tech - although this can be chosen with the last 100 pts which it costs. Why is this so?

I hit this issue as well. Just couldn't pinpoint research centers.

And that's pretty bad actually, because it would be the optimal way to start a ZYW in TA.
The Yor-tree is by far the best for that, their "Research Matrix" is very strong, but only a one-per-planet building. Nevertheless, their "ResearchCenters" are nearly as strong, and these could be build then everywhere from turn 2.
