Something I bet you didn't know about....

Something I bet you didn't know about....

Well, I didn't....

This is a source of concern which I didn't know about until I saw this video clip which a friend emailed me.

I wonder how many of the machines used to copy your data...tax forms, health records, checks... well the list goes on and on... and how about the government, military, etc. are being sent who knows where without those HDD's being wiped?

I wonder who uses these "formerly owned or rented" copying machines now?

Also...there's not too damned much any of us can do about it, even if we did know.

Hey Doc you can't have all the fun.;)

Here's another tip from the Wiz:

Typewriter ribbon is another good source of personal data, everything you typed can be read off of one. Keep that in mind the next time you throw one out.

Absolutely correct, Wiz... I just haven't used one of those in decades. In fact, it was the subject of an NCIS show in the past!

Link to the show recap.

Quoting PurrBall, reply 2I'm surprised nobody knew about this earlier- just don't copy sensitive information on non-personal scanners!

Ummm...and what about people in Insurance Co.'s, I.R.S., Banks, M.D.'s offices, etc. who copy your files to send on to other offices? Think about that one, Purrball.

*edit...sorry Barb....I type slowly...and with the errors I make, thank G-d I don't work entering data/orders at the stock exchange....
End of DrJBHL's quote

I've asked around a bit after watching this and it seems nearly every place uses copier disposal services that wipe the hard disks before reselling.

Or, Purrball, they saw the CBS show also. I don't think CBS would have loaded stuff on the drives just to have the expose, do you?

Well that's pretty pathetic.

Seems like that "option" package with the wipe capability shouldn't be an "option", it should just be built in.  I know they said it was something like $500, but if they just built it in at the factory instead of as an add-on it probably wouldn't really add that much to the price.

'Course I would've thought that the oil industry might have given some thought to "How To Plug An Offshore Leak" before they started poking holes in the ocean floor, too.  I'm funny that way.  Guess they just figured they could drop an oversized brick on it or something.

i am with u on this   Dave - maybe we cld drop a brick on the copy manufacturers?  lol

i think the only way 2 b really sure yr hdd is clean is to smash it with a hammer, its fun and very theraputic
