AI using custom ships?

Sorry if it's been asked often, I did a quick search and turned up nothing. Here's the question;

 

Is there any way I can make the AI use custom ships (custom in appearance only) that I build in the ship editor? I thought there was a way to do this but I can't seem to remember if it's true... thanks for any replies.
