Advice a noob- or Pirates, what the infernal afterlife!

So I got the game two days ago and I played diligently ever since. I think I got the hang of it, although I am of course not very good yet.

After winning a few games with fixed teams I thought I'd try my luck with a FFA and with pirates on. So how do you guys deal with pirates early in the game? It seems that no matter what I do, the AI bids on getting a pirate raid against me at the very, very last second, and so I am faced with a decent pirate fleet early in the game. The pirates come over and trash a few of my buildings.

How should I prevent this? I tried placing bids on opponents, but they seem to simply 'snipe' a bid against me. I have no clue how to handle this, and having a pirate party visit me early in the game will probably lose me the game...

What to do?

You could probably get away with having multiple weaker raids active at a given time, and since they'd acquire new targets regularly this would remove the EBay bid system since the pirates would pick new targets much more regularly.

I don't understand I'm sorry Darvin3. Is it that in diplomacy are they dumber? Because that seems not to be the case, they're more aggressive, like early in the game, at least in mine. I understand mid-to-end game is fine, I had no problems but early in the game they're a nightmare and they do take the fun factor out of the game completely.

First raid if it comes to you It definitely won't go against your HW so it most probably will go to some undeveloped planet. My suggestion is just leave them to kill that planet and sell all structures on it. When they retreat just recolonize again.

And no they are not dumber and they are not any smarter they just have minimum development on planet that they choose to raid and they are stronger. With scouting you can predict where they are going to attack and defend accordingly. Mostly at least to late game the choice per empire falls to 2 planets so its not so much investment is necessary to defend properly.

They do become nuisance late game again when they ships get massive hull and armor and they tend to attack with 30+ ships all with capital ship stats but by then you should already be able to spare some fleet to support your star bases.

PS I did like them even better in Diplo 1.00 when they were really strong and each raid was equivalent of loosing planet they attacked
