Other Races' Technology

Hi there,

I’m a new player to Gal Civ II and I have a couple questions about obtaining technology from other races.  Any response to my inquires would be appreciated.

It appears to me that it is possible to obtain race-specific technology.  For example, playing as the Terrans I was recently able to obtain Germ Warfare and Advanced Philosophy, neither of which appear to be native to the Terrans.  Can I obtain the benefit of these technologies even though they are not native to me?  In the example above, Advanced Philosophy says it boosts research by +5.  Does my civilization obtain this bonus even if it doesn’t usually obtain this discipline?

My second question relates to tech trading via the diplomacy screen.  Occasional technologies held by other races appear with an asterisk next to them.  What does this mean?  It looks like they might be race-specific technologies, but other race-specific technologies are not marked.  In addition, what does it mean when the tech I am trading for is in a white outline box?

Thanks,

If you gain a tech by trading or stealing, you get the benefits of that tech.

The asterisks mark techs that are unique to the civ but can be traded. Depending on your civ and your tech level, you should see some asterisks on your side of the trade window as well. Untradeable, unstealable techs like the Altarians' Xeno Mysticism don't appear in the trade UI.

The outline box is just a selection marker that probably shouldn't be quite as 'sticky' as it seems to be sometimes (it should go away after you add or remove an item from the trade list).
