Why animation is more important than graphics

This video demonstrates why animation is more important than graphics and why it makes or breaks the game if animation is not fluid and detailed.

And the ones that don't even have it are greatly impoverished. Just imagine Gyromancer with detailed animations of all creatures and their attacks instead of static pictures.

That is strange, I was under impression that GAMEPLAY was more important than graphics ;)

That video should be taken down, it might give Al Qaeda some ideas on their next terrorist attack.

That's quite a nonsensical thing to say since GAMEPLAY is amalgam of many things...

He might not actually be Hortz, but when I read the title, my first reaction was 'Hey, looks who's back...' Now, just in case you aren't Hortz...

Animation doesn't mean anything when the actual gameplay (with or without good graphics) is bad. I rather have a fun ascii game (Angband, Dwarf Fortress, ...) that I can keep on playing than a graphic powerhouse that's only fun for one (if that...) playthrough...

You are not thinking in the proper context, the games you mentioned are in their own separate category for which there are neither standards or expectations in the animation/graphics department. They are completely flattened in terms of all the visual elements and are entirely symbolic.

So when you have just one element that tries to be visually appealing(such is the case with Elemental) it inherently drags to surface other expectations and higher standards as a whole.

Well he's not denying that he is Hortz... I mean, if I just created my account today (as PRO_TMD did), and a bunch of people on the forums started calling me some other wierd name, I'd probably post something along the lines of "WTF are you talking about?"

Although maybe that's just me:P

My personal 'top 4 list', in terms of makes a 'good/fun' game...

4. Graphics: Obviously, getting hype going requires a few amazing screenshots/videos. But too many games have been overhyped due to amazing gfx, then failed because they didn't have a fun or engaging foundation.

3. Animation: Yes, animation trumps graphics. I saw a cartoon about how much life and appeal you can give simple shapes just by the quality of animation. Animations schools have students do much of their learning with a sack of flour...'cause if you can get a blob to express emotion, then you're on the right track.

2. Sound/Music: This is more of an 'aftertaste' phenomina, but the older I get, the more I realize what a huge impact a games music (and soundFX, to a lesser extent) had on my enjoyment and attachment to it. SHow me a screenshot of a boss battle in FF4 and it'll remind me of the game. Crank up the FF4 theme 'Battle with the Four Fiends', and a floodgate of warm, fuzzy memories is unleashed.

1. Gameplay: When it comes to making a game, gameplay is king. We need to nail this or all hope is lost....if you read in forums people saying 'Elemental has so much potential', it has nothing to with 2, 3, or 4.

Anyways, just my take on the subject :)
