Gaddafi Has Another Good Idea

I like Muammar Gaddafi. He is my favourite Arab dictator.

Of course, I'll never forgive him his treason and betrayal of his king, Idris I of Lybia; but as Arab dictators go he is one of the tamer and more entartaining ones.

Today he has this great idea:

Nigeria should be divided into two nations to avoid further bloodshed between Muslims and Christians, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has said.

In a speech to students, he praised the example of India and Pakistan, where he said partition saved many lives.

Splitting Nigeria "would stop the bloodshed and burning of places of worship," state news agency Jana quoted him as saying.

Nigeria immediately rejected the idea.

But you know what?

He is right. It would be a good solution.

The country of Nigeria was a creation of colonialism and its borders do not represent borders between tribes or nations. So why not divide it up along tribal or religious borders?

Many countries in Africa are collections of tribes that don't want to be the same country and in many cases rule each other. I have mentioned Sudan and Somalia as prime examples before.

Sudan consists of at least three very different parts, the Muslim Arab east, the Muslim African west, and the Christian African south. Those three have been fighting each other for decades (i.e. the Arabs have murdered millions of the Africans while Muslim and African Christians have never done anything to each other).

Somalia also consists of three very different parts, the land around Mogadishu in the south, Puntland in the east, and Somaliland in the north. The (nominally) Arab government in Mogadishu has no control over Somaliland (in the north) or Puntland (in the east) or even the territories in the south (where it fights Taliban-style loonies).

Of course, Gaddafi never understood the concept of a country that actually works:

Last year, he called for Switzerland to be abolished and for its land to be divided between Italy, Germany and France.

He mellowed with time.  He was not always so (Lockerbie bomber anyone?)

As for Nigeria, that is up to them.  Let them put it up to a vote and keep the US out of it.  After all, the US is one of the worst countries to peacefully decide on that course of action.

As for Switzerland - if you do not like making watches, mountain climbing, or banking, you are not swiss and can move to any of those countries. ;)

Nothing he did even compares to the atrocities committed by all the other Arab dictators (except Sadat and Mubarack).

Nasser destroyed Nubia when he flooded their territory. Bashir and previous Sudanese dictators murdered hundreds of thousands of Africans and starved to death over a million more. We all know what Saddam did to Kurds and Iranians. The Algerian civil war cost 150,000 lives. We both know what Syria and the PLO have done.

Perhaps the "Kings" of Saudi-Arabia are tamer than Gaddafi but they are certainly more evil.

Mubarrack prefers money over violence, Sadat was a hero, and some of the other leaders I genuinely accept as kings and not dictators.

For me a "dictator" is someone who rules a country without being legitimised (and constrained) by popular vote or tradition.

Somebody had to propose the idea.

But I doubt Nigeria can ever do that peacefully.

I was not comparing him to the worst, only saying he has never been a real nice guy.  It was the IRA that used his country for training during its hey day (along with radical muslims of yesteryear).

I would not invite him to a tea party, no matter how much he "seems" to have changed.

Hugo Chavez is someone I wouldn't want to have tea with.

He doesn't seem like someone who knows how to behave and he certainly doesn't seem to be very friendly or entertaining.

Frankly, I don't know why a star like Gaddafi would hang out with that nerd.

Are there any more adjectives that you can put on Qaddafi?  Maybe we can string a line 256 characters long for him! ;)
