Last Impulse and Fences update problems.

Hello,

After ugrading last week my computer crashed on restart (Windows recovered from a fatal error...), then it started allright but there was a constant really noisy activity on the hard drives, all other programs where unstable. I thought my hard drive was about to dye, :waaaa: cloned it on a purposely bought new drive but 8C Oh my god!!! Same trouble.

Uninstalled Fences and Impulse and everything went back to normal. I lost a couple of days work in the process.

What a shame, I really enjoyed Fences!  :'(

Same thing is happening to me. I completely uninstalled Fences, ran a search and deleted everything with fence in the name. I reinstalled Fences Pro since I have OD, the drive started constant running immediately. I notice a debug file is being written to constantly in my profile>App Data>Stardock>Fences>toubleshootlinglog. I looked at it but it seems to be encrypted or something. I saved it if someone can look at it.

I WANT MY FENCES BACK! I use it constantly.:(

I am running XPsp3. I use Fences, CursorCP, WindowsFX, and ObjectDockPlus.

Send an email to support@stardock.com and attach the fences_debug_info.txt file along with it.

Same thing here, which is a shame, as I love Fences and have become dependant on it, sort of ;)

Fences Pro 1.00 updated 2009-12-14, Installation verifies successfully from within Impulse.

After the last Fences update, I noticed Explorer eating up 25% to 45% CPU and the hard drive being constantly accessed. Using Process Monitor I found that Explorer.exe was constantly accessing and writing to fences_debug_info.txt.

After disabling Fences (from within the Fences settings dialog), hard drive activity immediately ceased and CPU load dropped to normal.

Would it help to post the fences_debug_info.txt file even after the program was uninstalled? I looked at the file and what wasn't encrypted, showed uninstall information only.

I am having the same issue with Fences Pro using 50% of Explorer.exe cpu utilization and at times my AV, (NIS 2010) is also running at 50% with Fences Pro installed.

This all started after I got an error message that the program was no longer activated. I ran the update and wham, the problems started.

I have had to uninstall Fences in order to get my system back to usable condition.

I have Win XP Pro with SP3 installed.

If you need anything further, let me know so I can send it in.

Same problem, same solution.  Sadly I uninstalled and archived practically every programme and game (over a full day) before thinking of Fences as the culprit.

In regards to the explorer.exe, some have mentioned the 'Lock Fences' option as being the culprit.  While we're looking into it, try disabling it, and let us know if that helps.

I never had "Lock Fences" on, for any fence. Still the "Explorer eats CPU and writes to the fences logfile busily" problem occurred, so from my point of view I cannot confirm any relation to the "Lock Fences" option.

Edit: I've tried once more and activated Fences. CPU drain and disc activity didn't start right away, I watched for about ten minutes and everything seemed fine (yet). Then I'd been using the computer normally, and forgot about it. At some time during the next hour the problem started again, for when I remembered roughly an hour later and checked Explorer was eating about 35-45% CPU and busily accessing the disc once more. Upon disabling Fences again this activity immediately stopped. None of my fences was locked at any time.

I never enabled Lock Fences in my configuration, never saw the need to do that, so you can count that out as a cause.

Have the same issue, tried uninstalling, removing all signs of it from drives, tried toggling everything in Fences options, but no love, so I have uninstalled this POS until it is fixed.

Looks like there is a new version posted late yesterday that is supposed to fix the issue. I just reinstalled and so far so good. I will post later if there are any further problems with this update.

Thanks for addressing the issue!

Similar to what the others say, the problem has not occurred again on my machine after installing yesterday's Fences update.

Thank you, Stardock, for the fast response! :)
