To smurf, or not to smurf...

I Smurf consistanly, even more so then Siddy. I smurf to train and learn new tactics, for example, i been recently training to play vasari, still not as good as other clan players, but I am slowly getting there. If I play and lose as a vasair player in a normal game with my name BlackHawk tag, people will just brag all day long that they whooped my candy ass, and I can have that.

Not only this, but smurfing is psy warfare, if your opponents knows ur a smurf, he does not know WHO you really are, excpet that you must be good. But the problem for him is that, he doest not know what player you reli are, for example, howthe likes to expand more, then JJ, who is a mixed bad of pick and mix.

Knowing hes a smurf is worse, but not knowing who he is, makes it terrifing.

Smurfing is part of the game, enjoy it and have fun.

I can understand why peoplee smurf (trying new things and such) however, the question is dirrected towards the P.U.G. where people are chosen by order of skill or more precisely capability. 

So, for the sake of the P.U.G. in order to keep things as fair and as fun as possible maybe bring the "main" account. 

If someone wants to smurf while trying new things, thats fine, maybe set up a 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 to play.  But should someone come into a P.U.G. to get a "smurf advantage".

See I don't get the whole, "I can't try new things on my main account, I might get a LOSS.  The whole community will laugh at me!"  Uh huh.  There's no ladder or ranking system in Sins.  A few loses are not going to matter.  I mean, if you're 'trying new things', don't you WANT people to play normally against you?  If you succeed in making them think you're a newb, they might go easy on you and your 'new strategy' will not get proper testing.  There are very few reasons I can think of where smurfing is justified.

I don't smurf; one player, one name

Its all an excuse to beat up on other players. I dont care what anyone says. If you cant be yourself online. Then you must really suck as far as this game goes.

played 3 2v2 games which turn to 2v1.  I usually get stuck with the most noob and if its an arrogant one and not listen will bunker up instead of helping or feed me. fun times

As a smurf, or under main account?

There is never a reason to smurf. Never ever never ever.

I have only one account and one name.

For me this question is wrong. Z00M. we all agree smurfing sux and is bad but u wont ever change it untill its allowed by game account mechaniks.

So the question isnt smurf or not to smurf, but haw to make devs change character system in sins.

It has beed sad so many times and so many sugestions made , seems like its a  hudge technical problem or devs dont want to change it for some reason, or thry give a shit about our opinion. ( i think its third option)

Or maybe devs smurfs themselves...........( stupid argument cause they can simply make another account)

So if u want succesfuly fight off smurf plague, u should think haw to make devs implement non-smurf mechaniks into diplomacy , convince them that is a new argument for online comunity to buy  diplo.

Some people agree, most don't. But like Quar said, it doesn't matter at all as long as it's possible. I've never smurfed, never will, but it doesn't make a real difference. I feel for you, though...

If it "sux and is bad" why can't we as the community at least TRY and make a change.  Complaining things will naver change and doing nothing to bring change sounds like being hungry and not willing open your mouth for food.

Perhaps I should begin a new post to the dev. On the need for SOMETHING to happen.

Sins is a small community- we must do what we can to make it enjoyable for as many as possible.

We already deal with minidumps (largely out of our control)-do we have to deal with "manysmurfs"( this one we can control).

Either way, they both smell just as bad.

I have a potential solution but it would never work.  If you people would learn how to use IRC, then the pugs could be organized in IRC and people could be made to log in to a single account name in IRC in order to join the pug channel.  This also allows for a system of discipline (such as temporary bans for smurfers).  However, it would make it all very inaccessible to noobies and casual players who aren't in the loop.

Quar, it sounds as if you will use a loophole until it is closed and it isn't an actual willingness or desire to stop smurfing.  You are basically saying you will until you are forced not to by the developers in some way.  That is the way the other smurfs will be as well.  Change can either come from the community or the developers.  If people would kick those that are smurfy looking out of their game then there would be less incentive to smurf.  That isn't friendly to the actual new though.  Developer intervention would make this a lot easier though but from past behavior(not fixing smurfing in 2 years) it is unlikely it will occur.  I do not smurf myself and never have.  Smurfs are rationalizing it if they say they are doing it to try new things.  No one cares about stats.  They do it simply because they want to take advantage of unknown status to imbalance teams in their favor or to cause grief or mischief in one manner or another.  I would be in favor of curbing smurfing in any way though.

It's looking awesome for the bad team, because 80% (and I'm being fairly careful with my guess here) don't even bother to check the forums and thus won't make their opinion known and 90% of those smurf all day. You win, we lose. That's why there's the need for rule enforcement in this world. A single human might be capable of rational behaviour (not necessarily though), but a large group just gets out of control because sooner or less everyone acts solely to his advantage since 'everyone else does it as well'. Screw that.

I think the main problems are:

Small user base. With this, and the vast gulf of skill between vets and real noobs means that it can be difficult at times to get a game together. Noobs wont play with vets cos of the unbalanced nature of the contest based on stats, so the vets are forced to smurf to get a game at times.

As someone who can play but no skill, having many games on my account meant some people thought I was capable of capping - which I was not. I made a smurf to avoid being asked to cap, because I know Im not good enough for it most the time.

Some enjoy squishing noobs and will never want to learn how to play properly - they just come on wanting to win rather than having a good game.

IRC will never catch on because, like you say, noobs cant be arsed with learning something like IRC. Unless a decent system is built into SINs thats easy to use, no one will use anything else.

Smurfing has been around since the dawn of online gaming. When I was mudding 10+ years ago smurfing was pretty common, and many of the vets would have 5+ chars.

Basically if you can do something, someone will do it.

But ill be honest with you, once you played with you guys for a long time, you start to know who the smurfs are. For example, me and quar know all out smuStrarfs, just becuase he know how i play, and I know how he plays.

Berz usally likes to expand civic, nearly everytime, before attacking or rushing you, usally take 3 planets, then hits you with spammied illums and a progen.

JJ smurfs are also easy, if your being attacked in the first 50 seconds, then its jj.

Tyr ALWAYS keeps the same logo and Colour, but is always easy to know who he is by the way he plays.

Quar usally likes to rush you with an sb, or he is easly tellable late game as he loves kosta, always builds kostra late game.

Siddy dont smurf anymore, he always uses vampire smurf (....;) - something like that.

If the guys trash talks alot, and likes to piss off other people, then its starplayer. Usally says the word Ni***

If I smurf, I only smurf for two games and ALWAYS A VASAIR PLAYER! - I need training with vas, so i msurf with them. my smurfs usally last 1 or 2 games and then i tell people who i am. I NEVER ARGUE WITH ANYONE, I DONT ARGUE WITH NOOBS, only if someome starts on me.

what if you want to use a gamer name u have in another game like battlefield 2142/2 or any other of the infinite games out there. what agrivates me is that ppl who play multi in this game are too picky when it comes to the ppl they play with. i tryed to join a round and got kicked cause i was 'smurfing'  despite that i was only using a name i use in another game and the fact that i hadnt played enough, fine but dont get on the forums and *&@^# about how the multi community is so small .

now that thats out of my system, its just funny its a game just play and hae fun and dont kill the noobs too hard they're just beginers

I find it pretty easy to spot a smurf before a game, and then easier during and after the game. If I'm not sure about someone, Im certainly sure after a game with them, then its just a matter of whether I want to play with them again. So yeah, smurfing sucks, but I dont really have a big problem with it. I smurf all the danged time, but all my smurfs have records indicative of my skill so . PLus I smurf so much that 4 of the 5 accounts I have are around the same number of games played (between about 50 and 80). So when people are like "hey go get your main you smurf" and Im all like "I dont have one". So whatever.

and i can figure your smurfs out

just look for something that sounds British the its probably you

Im not flip-floping. I think smurfs should be removed by devs. And i say ill smurf untill it isnt.

Besides there is 1 more think noone mentioned. Only 2-3 peeps can identifi my smurf after 1 game, rest will know im a smurf im good, maybe im a DT smurf ( i like when peeps see a DT smurfs after every corner) but they wont know whith one. so they dont know whith variant of rush to expect.

Only Grey is so nice and let me SB him every time we play and even when he knows whats going  to happen , rest wil be prepared. thats my litte advantage. but still i think smurfs should be fixed, right after f***n bugged lums
