Hmmm....  sounds like given you final statement that you are likely using a pirated copy and thus have no access to the patches that legitimate purchasers have.  They have released several major patches for the game and the most recent adds mod support.

If you did not pirate the game, try download and registering in impulse.  Then it will tell you there is an update and you can download it and get the most recent version.
