Update 1.2 messed up our LAN MP

Demigod LAN was working fine before the 1.2 patch.  Now, hosted games do not appear to others connected to the LAN.

Any ideas folks?

I think there r many things that got messed up with this new update. We are gona have to wait until we hear from SD

First, make sure everyone has updated their game to the latest version - you shouldn't see versions that aren't the same as your own.

LAN is working fine here too. Maybe a Firewall is blocking it (the .exe got changed)?

Checked the versions. 1.2 across the board.

Checked the firewalls. Demigod.exe is allowed (let me know if there are other files that need to be excepted).

LAN works fine on other games too. Sins of a Solar Empire works, for example.

Lan worked fine for us last night, although, it was laggy occationaly to our shock.  I don't think I've every played any game via Lan that was laggy before.

The game is automatically lagged at 350 ms, even on LAN play.

I think he meant actual stutter.

Just to clarify, I'm not experiencing lag.  Hosted games are not even showing up to the other LAN party.  No matter who hosts.

Before the update, DG worked fine.

LAN is working. Presently works fine with other LAN games.

Firewall was shut down (to rule it out). Anti-virus was also shut down.

Both systems running Windows 7.

Still no dice.

Strange. If your LAN has access to the internet, try and start a game that way to see if it's indeed something wrong with the LAN component or if it's something more general. The fact that you can't see each other's games means there is either something wrong with the connection - and as you can play other games, this is clearly not the case - or there is something wrong with the game itself.

Also, re-validate all of your installs in Impulse, which should make Impulse check to see that they're running at the latest versions as I feel there is clearly something happening in that regard.

I play Demigod over LAN every day, and we've experienced no issues of any kind. We're running combinations of XP, Vista and Windows 7 and even have some people connected in over our VPN.
Best of luck.

More information on my problem.

As an intial matter, the two copies of DG at issue were validated and re-activated for trouble shooting. Didn't fix the problem.

Having no luck with the LAN, we tried DG on the internet (ZehDon's suggestion).

Computer #1 can log into Demigod multiplayer via the internet. Computer #2 cannot.  So it's looking like Computer #2 is the "source" of the conflict.

Both computers have Windows 7 - 64 bit, and Trend Micro firewalls/anti-virus. The LAN is a cable connection between the two computers.

Computer #1 has cable connection to internet modem.  Computer #2 has wifi to the internet (via the same modem).

Computer #2 has access to the internet, can log into Impulse itself, but when trying to log in DG, it gives us an "invalid user or password."  And the message is immediate, as if there's no attempt at connection at all.

This may be a totally irrelevant fact, but I'm going to throw it in case it might have something to do with this.  First,  the two copies/licenses of DG at issue were bought by the same user (me).  When activating DG on each computer, my email had to be used for each (with different product keys).  I was reminded of this when I reactivated both copies to troubleshoot this problem.  Since there seems to be some goofy login issue, I wanted to mention that.

If anyone has any more ideas, let me know.  Thanks for your help.

It's a networking problem. You have 2 networks on each computer configured, according to your description. That's why computer #2 cannot login and that's why Demigod does not work (because for Demigod/Windows it's ambiguous as to where to send the data).

If it is a networking problem, it is not one that existed prior to the 1.2 update. Also, other LAN games are working fine. Sins of a Solar Empire, Spectromancer and Splinter Cell are LANning just fine.  DG worked fine with this configuration before the 1.2 update.

Well, after re-installing and re-activating both games, we finally got a connection and were able to play.

We were excited. And then we played.

Lag, lag, lag, lag.

Yep, like I wrote, I Lan connect just fine, but it would have lag simular to what I would have in online play (ocationally).

Firstly, glad to hear you're making progress.

Lag, lag, lag, lag.
End of Dundolian's quote

You'll need to be more specific - were you experiencing a time delay between what was done and when it happend?
If so, keep in mind the game has an automatic delay of 350ms built into the code which becomes blindinly apparant on a LAN game. It's not game breaking, but it can be a bit of a shock if you're used to playing games that don't.
Or do you mean you were experiencing stop/starts throughout the course of the game?
This could possibly be a SIM Speed problem, or a combination of other issues.

The lag starts after about 10 to 15 minutes of play (after 3 games).  All games lagged so much that we were unable to complete our games.  In one instance, it lagged enough that gave us both a "concede" option, and somehow split us both off into different games (the ai taking each of our places). That surprised both of us because we didn't hit "concede".  At least we are connecting... but clearly, something else is going on.

When the lag starts, it's severe, as in game-stopping.  Prior to the update, we had lag every now and than, but it would always clear up in a few seconds.

SIM Speed, you say?  Never heard of it.  I will look into it, though.

I can't say I've seen anything like that, so I guess we'll just have to start with SIM Speed and go from there. SIM Speed is basically how fast your computer can run Demigod, and it's listed on the Score Sheet in-game for each player. Anything above 1 is fine. It's essentially a score of how many times faster your computer can run the simulation - a SIM Speed of 2, for example, means you can run the game at double speed. This is a left-over feature from Supreme Commander.

Anyway, the fact that the lag starts later in the game, 10-15 minutes, would be a good indication this may be your issue. Check to see what everyone's SIM Speeds are in a game around this point. If any of them drop into the negative numbers, that's where your Lag is coming from as the game can only run as fast as the slowest PC and slowest connection in the match.

Take a look when you can and post back.
