How to remove dead icons?

I removed some programs that had icons in Fences, but now I can't remove the icons. I get a message saying "This is no longer located in C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop. Verify the item's location and try again."

How can I delete such icons?

I had this problem once and for me all I had to do was drag the icon out of the fence and then I was able to delete it

I have been unable to reproduce this issue. If WinMonster2's suggestion doesn't work, you might also try hitting F5 when the desktop is the active window.

I've seen this before, but with Fences installed and not.  It seems sometimes Vista/7 loses track of when public desktop icons are deleted.  Usually refreshing the desktop or logout/login will fix.
