More information would be helpfull.

What kind of computer?

How much memory?

What kind of stuff are you running, games, programs?

Usually additional memory will help speed things up.

A couple of things!  How long since your last defrag and disc cleanup?

It probably wouldn't hurt to run Ccleaner... do the disc clean first and the run the registry cleaner... just remember to back it up when you are prompted to do so.

It would help to uninstall any unnecessary programs/apps first, though.... Ccleaner will clean up any remnants... then run Smart Defrag to compact the remaining data.

These steps will help speed up operation/performance.  However, your specs are pretty low and a bit more RAM wouldn't hurt if you have it/can get some dirt cheap.

You make no mention of your graphics card, whether it is onboard or AGP/PCIe, whether or not it has shared memory.  If it's the latter, your system will take a performance hit, particularly when using graphics intensive apps.

A cheap standalone card with its own memory would help, but it is an old machine in PC terms and probably not worth trying to upgrade greatly or spending a lot of money on.

Hope this helps and best of luck. |-)

Well by the looks of that desktop...a red wallpaper may help. As we all know...red goes faster.

Seriously though, you need a new PC. Those specs are not very good for gaming by today's standards.

Build a new PC mate.

But if you have to keep it, more ram, follow starkers clean up steps and get the maximum speed CPU for your motherboard.

get the maximum speed CPU for your motherboard.
End of quote

Given the likely age of this machine and potential bottlenecks (eg, AGP pre-DDR1 RAM), it's unlikely a considerably faster/better CPU would greatly improve overall performance, and certainly not cost effectively.  So anything more than 50 - 60 bucks on a rig that old, I'd be more inclined to save the cash and put it towards a more modern machine... wouldn't have to be top-end, just something with decent specs at a respectable price.

You cannot turn a Yugo into Ferrari.

That said, If it works fine other than it is a bit slow on graphics applications, you can always keep the thing as a side web surfer next to a newer gaming rig when you buy or build one.

I personally turned my old P3 into a Linux learning lab!
