You know, people are idiots.
I mean, Houston is mostly transplants from everywhere else. So when Rita showed up and everyone was stupid and killed more people trying to leave than a hurricane would, I wasn't surprised. Now the East Coast is getting hit and I know it's happened before. Not usually big or that far north, but shit happens. In such a case, I would think that one of two things would happen. One, they would want to get the fuck out of the way since they hear it's bad. Two, they would listen to people, like Gulf Coasters, on what to do to stand their ground if they so choose. So far, everything I've seen says they're either trying to do the first, many at the last minute, or the second but without shit in the way of real preparation.
Are we surprised that public services have shut down or that things are being tied off the day before? We shouldn't, but I guess some are. So when it hits and all is said and done, if you see any people on the news floating back up in the waters left behind, know that they're probably people who were dead set on weeding themselves out of the population. They seem to be a constant wherever you go.
Bison, I hope you are one of the better off. If you're afraid you're not, then PM me for advice if you make it through this.
