ObjectDockPlus, Fences and Win7 Ultimate 64-bit

I found ObjectDock+ first so I use it. Then I found Fences and LOVE it. On my Win Vista 32-bit system, those two cohabited very nicely together with no problem. I have upgraded to Win7 Ultimate 64-bit and reinstalled everything. ObjectDock seems to work fine. But when I add Fences, I was getting all kinds of problems with the desktop. There were WinExplorer failures and other nasty problems. I saw a post on the Forum that said there were problems with the two cohabiting in Win7 so I backed off Fences because it is the beta software. Everything went back to normal with no more problems. Some time went by and I saw a new beta release of Fences was available, so I decided to give it another try. It loaded fine and I was having no trouble at all. I guessed they had sorted out the problems and I was good to go. Thursday (Oct 8), I logged into Impulse and saw another update for Fences, so I let it install. When the system rebooted, it would not come up. There was a corrupt OS files somewhere. I tried rolling back to a restore point before the update, but it did not help. I rolled back to a point before I reinstalled Fences and it didn't help. The only thing I knew to do was reinstall Windows (URK!).

I don't know what you guys are going to charge for Fences, but I love that program. It fills a hole for me that I've had a long time. Really great utility. But I'll have to wait till it gets fixed for this environment as I plan to stay with Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. Microsoft seems to be really pushing 64-bit now and it seems a lot of vendors are promising support for it. I hope Stardock is going to do the same.

Let me know if this gets sorted and I'll get going again.

I'm running Win 7 64bit...and Fences....with no issues at all.  My guess is you have a borked install/update...;)

Jafo,

You are probably correct...Win 7 64bit and Fences may run just fine. But I am also using ObjectDock. I saw on this site at least one other person posting about problems related to the combination of all three. When I was having problems before, they were related to WinExplorer (desktop?) failures. I would have to reboot the system and re-enable Fences to get it going again. Both of those programs seem to take over or influence some aspect of how the desktop works. Is it not possible that in 64-bit, they are not cohabiting nicely?

I didn't have a "borked" install then and I don't have one now. If, as you suggest, the update process is to blame, then that is on Impulse since that is how updates get done my machine.

I don't get why you Stardock guys automatically assume it is the customer (or customer's machine) that is the problem. I posted my experience here to let you guys know about some bugginess in the software. (Software behaviors that cause the machine to be unusable are pretty serious in my book.) I get it that it is beta software and I assume the risks by using it. You guys could at least use a few marketing skills and make me think you care more than to blow this off as having a "borked" install (whatever that means).

1) As you said, you are using beta software, that you downloaded for free.  There are indeed risks associated with doing this.

2) You are using ObjectDock Plus in a 64-bit environment, which it was not designed for, on a operating system that it was not designed for.

3) You are using an operating system that hasn't actually been released yet.

We appreciate the heads up on the problems you're having, but forgive us if we think the problem might be on your end.

Hmm,  Windows 7 may not have released to the General public. But it has been Released to MSDN and Technet subscribers since the beginning of Sept.

As a matter of Fact, I just attended a Microsoft/AMD event where Final release code of Windows 7 was available in a Kit.

On that point, I am running Fences and Objectdock in 64 bit Mode Windows 7.

There were issues with a few fences beta,  but the last 3 releases and final have resolved those.

Objectdock does have issues in Windows 7.  if docked to bottem it doesn't respect the task bar and is partially hidden.  So it will need to be updated from that point of view but otherwise it is running fine and has been during most of the Windows 7 beta.

I should state that I am not using the free version of object dock so ymmv.

BETA. Beta beta beta.

ObjectDock is not supported fully on ANY 64 bit OS, XP, Vista, or 7.

I hope that Stardock will work on making their products x64 compatible. One would think that this being a skinning community (made up of people who are either or all, power users, gamers and designers who usually have high end pc's) that they would be "hip" enough to understand the benefits of x64. :borg:

Yes.  Everything in Object Desktop 2010 should be 64 bit compatible on Vista and Win 7 (if you're using XP x64, my heart goes out to you and your family for your tragedy).  ObjectDock 2.0 will support have 64 bit support, but it has been slow coming.
