Updated to 1.17 crashes my computer?

I recently updated to v1.17 a few days ago and the game would freeze my computer.  Assuming it was the update I uninstalled sin and then reinstalled and, voila, the game would play again.  Early this morning I downloaded entrenchment and impulse stated that I needed to install the update once again and you guessed it, the game will not load and it kills my computer dead.  No blue error screen, just black as death and if I move my mouse around I can see the cursor at the bottom of the screen where the blue bar would be.  I have Windows XP, if that matters to any who might be able to help.  Please help me if you can, I love this game and was really looking forward to checking out the new stuff in entrench, or maybe I should just email tech support if there is one?

did you have any mods active before you updated?

if yes this might be the cause,

but it could also be a damaged update which could be confirmed & fixed by verifying sins install in impulse.

hope this helps

open impulse,

go to my games page,

right mouse click on game,

on popup menu 3rd from bottom is verify instalation, left click on it.

impulse will now verify that all the files are correct

Thanx Harpo, I did that and it said that they were properly installed.  I also had been looking around at the other posts of the same type and I noticed one that you replied to that said something about settings with the video running in a window or full screen.  IN the post you mentioned hitting the enter button when the screen goes black and guess what, it worked, entrenchment fired up and yippee hurrah I can play it.  So HIT THE RETURN (I meant the *enter*) BUTTON.

if you have to hit the enter during startup in fullscreen then swithc to window mode and you will see what the error is and with that it would be possible to track down the file causeing the error and re-name/delete it

there is two methods, the first is in sins on the options/video pace is a tickbox window mode

the second is to edit the user.setting file line 13 to VideoIsWindowed TRUE

I tried the first option and what ended up happening is my Zone Alarm firewall was detecting Entrenchment trying to access the internet.  Some how it wasn't showing the little window that the firewall spits out to let me know what was going on.  There is a "gaming" option in my security software that temporarily disables firewall alerts and that would of cleared up the problem.   Now that I think about it, I notice that once I login to my XP user account and DO NOT let any firewall alerts pop up before I start Sins that it does the same thing; black screen.  So I have two options, shut down the firewall alerts or follow through with Harpo's first option of going to window mode, then selecting the "always allow" button for Entrenchment  to access the internet.  I choose the later.  Thanx again Harpo and I hope that this helps the others with the same problem.  If it does let the rest of us know.
