Updating Fences - IE7 required?

Hi everyone,

I just tried to update fences to get rid of the annoying Nov. 1st message, but it tells me that I do have to have Internet Explorer 7 installed in order to "install" fences. I am using Firefox - is this just a bug that will be fixed, or is this desktop application now forever bound to a certain microsoft browser?

There have been several threads on this subject.

I believe you get a prompt to have IE 7 in order to run Impulse and not Fences.  If you have a PC you all ready have IE, probably IE 6.  Either IE 7 or 8 are better versions to have.  You choose whether you want to upgrade your version or not.

Oh, and no it's not a bug.

Hi Cookieman321,

I put in a support ticket and was promptly told that Impulse was IE7 only and no Firefox support was planned...

I replied to that EMail in the form of a complaint and reminder that there are a lot of us Firefox / Opera users out here who will NOT install IE7, but that would like Fences.

I want to upgrade Fences to the newest, I would pay for it, but I will NOT install IE7 on my laptop.

And saying IE7 or 8 is better than IE6 is a moot point.. Firefox is far better for ME and those like me than any version of IE.

Also, saying you choose to upgrade or not is like saying you choose to pay your taxes or not.... there is no choice... It should read "You choose to use Fences with it's nag screen until it no longer works or uninstall it and find another product.

Requiring IE7 or 8 is not the best solution when there are so many solutions that require no browser.

Of all of the auto updating software I have, none of it uses IE6, 7, or 8... and it all works flawlessly.

I suggested to Matt, one of the support staff, that Fences would have more customers if it did not require IE7... and that Stardock Corporation's programmers should learn something besides ASP if they wanted to have a larger market share. (well, that's a severely paraphrased and truncated version)

I wish you all the best of luck... maybe someone who has the power will read this and make the connection.... maybe.

Best regards,

Aaron

...but you already have IE6. What's the difference between having IE6 and not using it and having IE7 and not using it?

Whether or not you use another browser is irrelevant.

I use FF3 exclusively. IE8 is on my system somewhere but has no effect at all on me using FF3. So I don't understand the problem :annoyed:

Bingo.  Install it for the sake of the Internet at least: http://mashable.com/2009/07/16/ie6-must-die/

Yeah, well, Windows 7 is just around the corner and it will enable you to disable IE (hopefully) for good. What then?

You trust MS for your OS but not for your browser?

You still will have the choice of installing IE 7 or 8.  What would you expect to happen?

This IE7 stupidity is hilarious. I wonder, the way some people's thinking process works, how they make it through the day.

  • IE6 installed, but not used
  • IE7 installed, but not used
  • IE8 installed, but not used

= no difference at all to using any other browser. The only difference is when you upgrade IE, Windows becomes more secure.

There's no point in discussing this further. Just let them wander off into the ether and believe whatever they will.

Win7 will allow you to disable IE7 (8) but the engine will still be there and be used.  Just like it's used in Vista.

When somebody shows a sly grin,
And says having IE's a big sin,
At their ears I will aim,
And quite loudly exclaim,
"Won't somebody think of the children!?"

If your work has been giving you grief
About making the switch, I'll be brief.
It's not us you should fault,
Your complaints should default
To your IT department's head chief.

You've always been able to remove the browser app itself from Windows (iexplore.exe), this is not required for Impulse.  Impulse requires the latest version of the IE rendering engine (mshtml.dll) that is included with IE7 and later.  This .dll file is used for everything from to Windows Media Player to the help for most of your included applications.  As a Firefox user myself, I could care less if IE is installed or not, but you'd better believe I install all the updates, as any security problems/fixes would affect all of these applications.  Just because you have it installed doesn't mean you have to use it.

That said, we are working on removing the requirement for IE7 from Impulse.  This would only affect the web side of the application (store/community pages) and warnings will be put in place to this affect.  Currently, the warning you get at the begining of the Impulse install is just that: a warning.  The app will still install and function, but you may notice issues on the above mentioned pages.

Cheers. With fences being an absolutely great app, I was wondering wether I could tell my clients to upgrade their version of Solitaire in order to display my graphic products. (I mean, there is no harm really, and it doesn´t hurt their pc, right?)

Thanks again, looking forward to the next versions.

Not QUITE the same thing, but I am interested in how your app takes advantage of the solitaire app.

Although I did enjoy our crusade against IE6, it appears to be ending.  Impulse will now work with IE6, but with no guarantee of functionality of the web based parts of it (Store, Community pages).  You will be warned of this at install time.

Interesting...with the release of Fences 1.0 today you do not need Impules or IE7 to install it. It has it's own stand alone installer.

This turn of events makes this thread pointless.
