Stepping Up: Anybody Willing to Share Strategies for moving from Painful to Masochistic?

Well I know that there are quite a few posts on this topic for DL and DA, but TA seems to play much differently in many respects. Would anybody be so kind as to share how they tend to approach games on difficulties above Painful in TA? Any suggestions/tips/strategies would be greatly appreciated (especially for colony rush).

Colony rush fast as possible risk going bankrupt. Boost population on 100% approval for a while and spend spend spend. When going to go bust hit in heavy taxes. Turn evil get psyonic beams load up medium\ large ships with them and invade ruthlessly .
