ObjectDock 2.0 - First Sneak Peek

ObjectDock 2.0 - First Sneak Peek

One of the most asked about applications is ObjectDock.  Specifically, people have been wanting to know about ObjectDock 2.0.  Some have speculated that we have simply given up on ObjectDock, and that is simply not so.  It is in development, but since it is early there is no time estimate about release, nor about upgrading.

First off, what is ObjectDock?

Objectdock is a smoothly-animated, customizable 'shelf' on which you can place shortcuts, docklets, system tray icons, and view running applications. The program is available in two versions: Plus and Standard. The Plus version offers multiple docks, tabbed docks, and a unique feature called flyout menus. The free version, while still demonstrating the capabilities of the 'zoomer' docks, limits you to only one dock. You can customize ObjectDock to be anything from a taskbar replacement to a fancy docklet-filled information center.

ObjectDock is certainly one of the most popular desktop applications around, and a lot of work is going into the new version.  Maybe in another week or so, a video might be in order.  :)

Let me make note, this is an early screenshot and is still subject to changes in the final version.

With that being said…..

No, not from you.. Linux/Apple fanboi. :-" ;P

I mean, Apple/Linux fanbois wouldn't do a thing like that, now would they?

I really a die hard Apple/Linux nut am I?

Is that why I'm using XP right now? ;)

(I just like pointing out where other systems are better at certain things is all. For the most part I use XP)

Gimme a break! You're not going to buy it because of the background color?!?
I'm more concerned with all the new stuff in OD 2.0. i really could care less about the ui. Besides, you buy these things for what they can do-- not what their ui looks like.

So, you'd be happy using a program where you could not read the configuration pages? What if the colours happened to be bright magenta text on a bright green background? ...Do you have any problem reading this???...

You have to hand it to Stardock for trying to be like Apple.

This was resolved after the original poster gave more information as to the why.  He has bad eyesight.

quite an erronous statement seeing that apple DIDN'T invent the dock. apple don't invent things they just take things, tweak them then claim them as their own.

I don't think this was directly related to the "dock", but to the way that Stardock is removing most of the user control of the software and only allowing users very narrow minded interfaces and options.

we get a lot of feedback from a lot of sources.  With only so much dev resources we have to find that balance between what the "power users" want and the rest of the world.  Think of it JoeHobbyist vs JoeConsumer.  Our goal is to keep applications accesible and powerful.  Sometimes we please one group more than the other but we try to please both.

I know precisely what Zubaz means.  My own company's software is extraordinarily complex and difficult to configure, but is very powerful.  We come across very few business requirements we can't configure.  That said, oftimes I wish we had an "Easy" button, or at least a "Basic" and "Advanced" view of some screens.  Some customers' requirements just aren't that complex, and it'd be nice to present a simpler interface for them, while having an optional advanced interface for everyone else.

No, as it is missing Tabs.

I'm disappointed to see there is still no way to turn off/on a particular dock tab, rather than simply having to delete it.  Sometimes I just want to see a few tabs, rather than all of them.  A tab on/off feature would really prove beneficial.
