Skrimishing in multiplayer

I've yet to join a skirmish match. Are there better times than others? Do people just not skirmish much?

Skirmish and Pantheon are the source of a lot of connectivity isues of late, though my issues are slowly getting better.

Yeah atm custom games aren't too bad but I spend more time trying to find a working skirmish match than playing the match.  And I'm not exaggerating.
