The Orb of Something or Other

I was just reading this thread where whoppin referred to the Orb of Veiled Storms as the "orb of something or other" and it inspired me to think what the Orb of Something or Other would do.

After being initially amused by the thought I now think it could be an interesting addition to the artifact shop. Basically the idea is for the Orb to produce a random effect. Some may recognise the idea as being similar to the Deck of Many Things from DnD.

Because the effect is random there is no telling what might happen. Teleporting 15 yards to the right might be incredibly useful if you activate the Orb before a death blow falls... or it could drop you screaming into a chasm. It could do nothing particularily useful, such as summon a flock of butterflies which fly off while you are maimed. Or it could drop a meteor on top of your position, giving you the last laugh after being killed. The possibilities are endless.

While I realise this artifact may be difficult, impossible or take too much effort to code I think this it would be a lot of fun, fit in thematically and be something a little different from the other items which is why I think it deserves to be in the game.

Everybody post your ideas on what the random effects could be! I'm sure even if the item does not become a reality some of the ideas will at least be amusing.

Sounds very fun!

I think it should also have some abilities that would be good when you are not dying (don't really know what, but something that would make people use them in other situations also). That would make some people run up to stuff and hope to kill it, but end up commiting suicide... :D

I also think it would need to be quite cheap, becasue it might be bad for you.

In beta, you could target your tele at the edge(or i believe off the map completely) and you'd tele off the edge of the map ;)

Most lollest bug ever..

In SupCom, if you set your Air Factory to hold fire and make Mercies, when they attack they will just plummet to the ground, run into the target and take back off to do it again. But they don't have a way to change them off of hold fire so you're stuck with bonking till they run out of fuel.

Just commenting on my favorite oops in a game :D

Well I was using just about to die as an example. Obviously if you are not about to die teleporting 15 yards goes from life saving to a 'nothing' effect. I could see people triggering it hoping to get the meteor effect only to be teleported off the map. Now thats just damn funny

Maybe it could provide you with a temporary mana regen buff. Again this could be really good if you need mana or it could be a 'nothing' effect if you have full mana. There would be no way to anticipate which effect you get.

The real point of this kind of item is that its playing with fire, its a gamble - with either tide turning benefits, disasterous backfires or a pointless puff of smoke. As well as positive effects there should be an equal amount of negative effects or others that do nothing.

What can be really great about this is sometimes negative effects (like the meteor falling on your head) can turn out to be positive ones (you die and then the meteor kills your killer) or positive effects (instant teleport to safety) become negative (teleports to death). Effects that normally do nothing could have surprising positive or negative effects... or positive and negative effects.

Perhaps even secret effects such as your opponents can now see exactly where you are for 3 minutes as you now have a Vegas style neon sign saying "Kill Me!" floating over your head. Now activating the artifact and nothing happening makes you wonder... oh no... what did it do?

As a fake out you could also make it do nothing at all but leave the person who activated it wondering what the hell happened.

I can't tell you how much I love this idea. I'd buy it every game.

Thanks Teseer :)

Chip in some more ideas for effects!

How about grants 50+ hp per second but freezes you in place with no access to abilities for 7 seconds.

You die instantly when you activate the orb... but next time you die you respawn instantly where you died on full hp and mana?

You activate the orb then the annoucer says "Blue... no Green!" and everybody in the arena is thrown off the map.

More ideas!

Worth it for this alone.

Builds a fortess (Or tower/mini-heal crystal/item shop) at your location? Sometimes an enemy one?

Spawns a new flag? Grunts? Minions?

All flags hammerslammed? Wings of Seraphim?

sounds like a lot of fun, however you shouldnt be able to "use" it, it should just activate at a random time anywhere from 15 - 45 seconds :)

ohh neat i have full mana !  / where the F*CK did my mana go !!

Could be just any random skill as well.

Use it, it could give you the circle for Rain of Ice. A single target curser (WHATS IT GUNNA DO!? I DUNNO! Lets click someone to find out!)

Just make sure it uses the cooldown when you TRY and use it so people can just keep using it to get the effect they want :D

Haha, oh man, this would make an awesome addition. Particularly like this one:

Yah! Thats the idea ;)

You activate it is a general... and all of your minions defect to the other side as AI controlled hostiles with you as their highest priority target. The announcer says "Viva la Revolution" and follows up with "Guillotined" if your own minions kill you.

You activate it and the game screen flips upside down for 30 seconds. Everything still works if you can manage it of course...

Upon activation the annoucer says "By the Power of Greyskull!" and you gain +50 weapon damage for 20 seconds. If you are playing Sedna Sila turns green and Sedna switches from saying "Sila defend us" to "Battlecat defend us" maybe something for the Torch Bearer as Skeletor?

Or a kill every DG within 30 meters as a random effect. No gold exchange.
:D

Also with that targeting crosshair one... if you target yourself hoping to get heal you could fireball yourself and die XD

The orb could summon an AI controlled entity that is a floating bone that moves really fast around the map. Any Unclean Beast that gets within... say a 50 yard radius of the floating bone loses control of their demigod and is forced to chase the bone as it zips around the map until it is either caught or the effect expires.

Also make this effect more likely to occur when there are more Unclean Beasts in the game. I think it would be hilarious to see a pack of dogs chasing the bone

hahaha. I like it.

I'll tell you, I must have a filthy mind cause I saw that going in a totally different direction before I finished reading it.

Storm - The announcer tells everyone "A storm approaches," followed by around 20 - 25 lighting strikes on random positions in quick succession.

Blizzard - The announcer says "A cold wind is blowing forth," soon afterwards, 3-5 waves of ice storms roll across the center of the map.

Increased Fog - The announcer says "Blackout!," Every players base vision radius is set to 5 for the next 2 minutes, reinforcement and structure vision radius set to 3, the only things that can see normally are Totems of Revelation.

Earthquake - The announcer warns "The ground trembles!" The map begins shaking around, lowering movement speed by 20%, and interrupting everyone every second, in addition, structures all take 100 damage every second. Earthquake lasts 18 - 23 seconds.

Blind rage - Your attack speed is increased by 25%, and weapon damage by 100, movement speed increased by .5, damage taken is lowered by 15% for 12-15 seconds, during this time, you have no control over your demigod, who runs to attack anything nearby, or runs to find something to attack. You cannot control minions either, but they will follow you as normal unless they were told to stay somewhere beforehand.

Barrage - The announcer says "Incoming Barrage!" Every demigod has 2-3 waves of trebuchet rocks dropped over their position, each wave coming in one second intervals and consisting of around 15-25 rocks. The barrages take a moment to land, allowing those who move upon seeing them to get out of most, if not all, of the damage.

Hurricane - The announcer says "The wind has picked up!" Wind immediately starts blowing, blowing all smaller units off the map, and lowering movement and attack speed by 20%, in addition, targetting cursors move back and forth as they are blown around. Lasts around 22-30 seconds.

Mass Transporation - The announcer says "Transportation!" All demigods are transported into the opposite team's base for 12-15 seconds, afterwards, they are all transported to the middle of the map.

Reinforments - A portal opens beside you, bringing in 40 soldiers and 10 archers that immediately run to the enemy base. Base health for all of them is increased by 1.5x, in addition to any upgrades purchased from the citadel.

Flag wipe - The announcer says "Flag wipe!" ALL flags are turned neutral, even the ones in your base.

Supplies - A potion and mana scroll are dropped beside you.

Well, this is all i could think of for the moment.

- Lode Runner style, a hole opens under your target and it has to stop attacking to get out or else the ground closes on it.

- Both you and your target get boxing gloves, have their melee range set to 0 and cant use any ability... or have new abilities "Jab", "Uppercut" and "Ear-chewing"...

- The map turns around and you're forced to play upside down!

- The narrator just laughs and nothing happens... (if it can do anything it has to be able to do nothing!! )
