My Demigod Impressions

I finally got a chance to download and play Demigod this morning.

The good:

+ The balance is much better than the beta versions.

+ The generals are much better

+ Addictively fun

+ MP Skirmish feature is very nice

The bad:

- Call me spoiled but I was hoping for even more game start up options

- Connecting to other players is a pain if you just toss up a game right now

- No single player campaign

I saw Istari comment elsewhere but I think what he says deserves some elaboration. I see a lot of people bitching about connecting in Multiplayer.

I think people have short memories. When I bought Rise of Nations, their GameSpy thing worked like crap. It was useless. When I got Company of Heroes, I basically had to forget MP until their first patch because I couldn't join games. When World of Warcraft came out, you couldn't get onto the server for like a month if you played on weekends and that was a game I was paying $15 a month to play AFTER the $50 at retail. Some people need to chill.

Now if Demigod had a single player campaign, it would probably have bought GPG/Stardock more time to update their servers to better handle the load and connection stuff. The single player tournament is not bad but i wish it had more difficulty levels but I digress.

At the end of the day, Demigod is a great game. I think almost anyone who's played it will agree. Is the multiplayer connection issue a problem? It is. But does anyone really want to argue that it's due to bugs in Demigod or that Demigod is unfinished or something? That's ridiculous. Does anyone really think a week from now we'll be worrying about this? People, it's a game. Be adults and have some patience.

Diablo 2 was a victum of its own success. They sold like 10 times the expected number in the first week and the servers couldn't handle the load. Eventually they got it iron'd out and I'm expecting Demigod to do the same. :moo: ps. I like the boards smilies

I'm surprised how many people forget that the game wasn't even supposed to come out until yesterday but are expecting instant gratification for their connection problems.

There were a ton more people trying to play on release than they had expected. Even a normal launch is hard enough but to start out running even harder.

I'm having a blast with the game.

Have to agree about the gameplay being really good, even tho i have yet to successfully connect in MP.

Personally i don't really care about a campaign, you only play a campaign once or twice anyways, what lasts is the MP (warcraft 3 anyone?) but i understand some people do.

What i hope for in the future is several more heroes, and more varied maps (all feels about the same, would be cool with ie a forest map, ice map, desert map etc).

More varied "armies/spawns/soldiers/whatever" would be nice as well, nothing wrong with the current ones but more variety is better.

Nothing to expect at launch tho, so except for the MP part (which im quite annoyed about) i think the game is in really good shape.

I don't think its unreasonable to expect a piece of software to work out of the box.

Connection problems are a bane for this game, as it is so multiplayer focused. It has less to do with server-side software, and more to do with lack of testing with network game code, and lack of willingness to fix the problems before release. As I understand it, these connection issues existed even in the beta.

As for whether or not we'll have the problems a week from now, I certainly hope that's the case. Demigod is near unplayable now, and not even close to being worth $40 bucks. I tried playing for 3-4 hours today, and got maybe 2 games going. The games themselves only last 30-40 minutes, max.

Blah blah blah, anyway, I'm pissed I spent money on this game, and so I want to whine more. But it's fruitless, so I'm just going to have to wait. We'll see how this game fairs after 3-4 more weeks of testing. Hopefully people are still playing!

End of Nullzero98's quote

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's unreasonable, naive or stupid perhaps.  Either you haven't bought many games or have a very short memory.  Ironing out all multiplayer issues before release is impossible (by impossible I mean so expensive it would be impossible to make a profit in the games business).

If you are one of the unlucky people suffering issues then try and resolve them yourself using the plenty of advice on these forums otherwise grow up and give support your issues and rant and whine if it isn't sorted within a week or two, not on the 2nd day of release.

Game works great out of the box.

Being able to connect to other people to play isn't a fault in what is in the box but the servers between that handle connections. Seems to happen with every game I buy.

Hell, I had trouble playing Dawn of War 2 because my Steam connection didn't work. I was mad but I didn't ascribe it to a buggy game. This is much the same except as Xan mention the game was only released yesterday.

Works great for me on an Unsupported os (Windows 7) and prob for a mass majority of others. I'm sure if you wrote a game you could factor in the millions of different setups every user has in his home. Hit the tech support here and throw up a dxdiag summary before you start casting some stones. If you want to complain go play sacred!
